[E-Type] Hot Spark electronic ignition kit for '66-'69 E-types

Has anyone tried this product?

Website is here: http://www.hot-spark.com/1-Lucas-Distributors.htm

According to the vendor these kits are compatible with 1966-1969 E-
types fitted with Lucas 22D6 and 25D6 distributors. Price seems
quite reasonable at $60, but do they work?–

They appear to be another form of ‘Pertronix’ type ignition;
though more reasonably priced. I may get one to carry as a
spare.–

Nick:
Any issue with these units and the 1968, 69 … Tach signal to have
a properly working tach?

Got this info back from Hot Spark:

Most later tachs that operate off of coil voltage, rather than
pulses, are simply connected to the coil’s - terminal.

Here is a modification used with VDO tachs:

Using Hot-Spark Ignition with VDO Tachometer:
Connect a diode #1N4005 between the negative terminal ( - or 1) of
the coil and the wire that goes to the tachometer. The cathode end
(silver band) should be nearest the tachometer side, not the coil
side. You should be able to buy a diode #1N4005 at Radio Shack or
other electronic supply store.

That guy assumes the tach is a stand alone device that monitors the
pulses from the points. The S2 is not that way, the power to the coil
goes through the tach so a diode is not an option. I think a work
around has been mentioned here as the Pertronix unit presents the same
problem and I know some people have used them.

Yeah – 7 years later I got seduced by a low price and the prospect of seeing what an electronic ignition might do. I ordered from eBay but see that the link from back when (above) has the same deal.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/312200861514?ViewItem=&item=312200861514&ppid=PPX000608&cnac=US&rsta=en_US(en_US)&cust=5TS8209984201601M&unptid=a4edb4a0-91dd-11e8-8540-8cdcd4b6ee30&t=&cal=4fa2a5955388f&calc=4fa2a5955388f&calf=4fa2a5955388f&unp_tpcid=email-receipt-auction-payment&page=main:email&pgrp=main:email&e=op&mchn=em&s=ci&mail=sys

A Pertronix-style ignition for $39.95 shipped seemed worth taking a chance on. I have installed it and preliminarily set the timing – I can say that the engine runs well and the tach reads correctly.

Too hot for a test drive right now, that will have to wait until tomorrow morning. Apart from tweaking the timing I want to drive some in the desert & up the mountain to let the unit get fairly hot, then heat soaked then see what happens.

I carry a spare distributor all set-up with correct timing so it is a direct drop in replacement - that is the unit I have fitted the Hot-Spark to. Time will tell if that becomes the spare or the points version will be the one in the boot.
