[E-Type] Idler pulley (new engine noise)

I called XKs and they wanted almost $200 dollars for the idler pulley.
Does anyone know where to buy a reasonably priced idler pulley for a 3.8
engine? I just tightened up the belt, and haven’t had any problems, but I
need a pulley. I’ve put less than 100 miles on it since then. I blew a
head gasket, and put a new one on, but I need to finish up the timing. I
took a new job that hasn’t let me work on it much.

John,

Might be worth it to give Welsh a try, 800-875-5247. They claim to have a
supply of used parts as well as new.

John,

this thread has been very helpful as with the lists help i have eliminated the
timing chain as the source of my engine noise, it’s the idler pulley.

do you or anyone else on the list know if the idler can be rebuilt?, i’d
rather not spend $200 on a new one.

I have in the past removed the little plate (other side of stud) washed the
bearing out then repacked the bearing with grease, then replaced the plate
and then centre punched the edge (as per OME) in a couple places to hold
said plate in place. It cures noisy bearings 90% of the time.
Hope this well help.

Scott,

I had a couple of suggestions to call Welsh or Terrys. I need to call
around. I am out of town right now, but will be home tomorrow. I’ll look
up the part number and call around. It may be next week before I have the
info. I’ll let you know.

I did get one response from a list member that has a supply of used pulleys
he would sell at a much lower price. If he doesn’t contact you directly,
I’ll ask him if I can forward the offer he made me.

If you are talking about the spring loaded pulley that the water pump
belt rides on, it’s called a jockey pulley tensioner. The good folks at
East Coast Jaguar can rebuild the pulley assembly. Seems to me it was
around $90 exchange for the old one. Here’s the contact info from my
parts and suppliers page. There was a $50 core charge on the old pulley
if you don’t return it.

      (302) 475-9258 - Fax
Complete line of new, used and
      rebuilt Jaguar parts. Brake parts
      re-sleeved. Water pumps and wiper
      motors rebuilt.

Usual disclaimers, just a satisfied customer, etc.

Let’s save you some money here!

The idler pulley can be completely disassembled in minutes. You take the
front cover off it (it is peened on), undo the nut securing the pulley
to the shaft, then you push the pulley off the shaft, undo the allen
screw holding the bearing in the pulley, then press out the bearing with
a socket.

I found my bearing totally dry so I packed it with wheel bearing grease,
reassembled it and all was well.

Should the bearing be worn you can take it to a local bearing supplier
who can either match it to another by cross referencing the part number
stamped on it, or measure it and then sell you a new one for less than
$10.
