[E-Type] Improvements that actually seem to be working

Preparing fot the Monterey Reunion and the Southwest Oil Leak (SOL)
I have been trying to address some perennial small problems and so
far all have helped!

My SS exhaust from about 30 years ago was supplied with 4.2
resonators – the shorter version. XKs had a special on the longer
3.8 resonators in polished stainless, so I just sprang for them.
No exhaust work is really fun, but this was not too bad. Once they
were on, the exhaust sounded, well… about the same. And that’s
not too bad. However, when I got on the highway I found the
resonance at 2600 RPM was much reduced, and in fact the whole car
was a lot quieter at high speed cruise. This will be good on the
SOL!

I also installed an electronic flasher – a NAPA part, EL 13
flasher, part no 27210 apparently. This is what XKs sells with
their LED taillights, but you can probably get it cheaper at NAPA.
If you nave a 4.2, you probably don’t have the problem of voltage
dropping precipitously at idle. That’s what we generator owners
have to put up with. At a stop light at night, the low voltage
seriously slows down and almost stops the flasher, so the car
really looks sick! Sure enough, this electronic unit keeps a crisp
steady beat even at low voltage. Another win!

I finally have refinished the replacement spare tire cover – the
plywood board – that I got and Ray L. reshaped a little for me.
The old one was shredding up pretty badly, so it was needed.

Finally after many years I actually painted the ‘‘JAGUAR’’ in the
wheel spinners black. Looks pretty nice! When I got the car
somebody had filled the letters with cream colored spackling paste,
which really went well with the cream body color. But with all
this talk of originality, I decided to go back to black.

As I mentioned earlier, I installed the Lucas PL700 headlights and
new seals so the headlight nacelles are probably really sealed for
once.

On top of that the car is running so very well now! I love E
Types, particularly this one!

Wishing the same for you,

Jerry–

Happy for you, though I had to look up ‘spackling paste’.

Seems water soluble. Guess that’s not as big a deal in CA as it
would be in the UK…!

I was driving home yesterday and the car simply could not be
smoother at 2000-2500 in fifth (60-70 mph). Not even a tremor
anywhere - I’m happy with my engine build. Made me think that it
has taken about a year from putting it on the road to get to the
point where I’m content with it for now and the intrusive niggles
are sorted. I would now go anywhere across Europe in it without a
hesitation and without a boot full of spares and tools. Which just
leaves the small radius arm bushes and other IRS stuff to fettle
and she’ll be golden.

I love anything ‘classic’ on two wheels or four, but it’s nice to
have a car where you don’t have to make any concessions to its age.
You can do anything the moderns can do, sometimes more and ALWAYS
in greater style

Laisser les bon temps rouler pour toi Jerry!

I think part of the joy of owning these cars is the preparation for
road trips. Certainly something the trailer crowd misses out on.

Looking forward to our annual trip to the Glen next month, I was
chasing a miss around 3500 rpms. After doing the static timing,
checking points & plugs, I noticed a set of NGK plugs on the bench
that I had briefly used a couple years ago. Not sure why I had
removed them, except maybe to put the ‘correct’ Champions in
there. Re-installed the NGKs and a short run on local roads saw
4000 rpm and no miss.

May all your travels be safe & fun.–

Common language! Well, they make it with an acrylic base in some
cases, and that resists water once dry.

Precisely why I stopped using Champions, ages ago, and switched to
NGKs: seems the issue may still chase them.–

I’ve been doing a few things to the PrtyKty too. Treeted her to a new set of spark plugs, the others were about 10 years old. Sure idles smoother now.

Hi Jerry,
Fantastic, I am looking forwards to seeing your car this Sept!
Some 4.2 owners have the same problem, I just replaced my
Lucas alternator with an AC Delco and it still does the same
thing with headlights on and fans running. So I’m going to
head down to NAPA Saturday and see if they’ve got one of those
electronic ‘gizmos’. Thanks for the tip.

Dave,

You did all that in 4 months? I am truly humbled. I am desperately
trying to have my Series 2 ready for Monterey, but have been
working on it for more than 3 years! I have a few more days to
install the interior and then hope for no mechanical problems. I’ve
driven it bonnetless for less than 1/2 mile since installing the
engine, so that hope borders on blind fantasy.

David, since you live in Monterey, you’ve got an 8-hour advantage
over me! Given what you have left on your list, you might need it.

Seriously, keep fighting the good fight. I’ll keep my fingers
crossed that your mechanicals are sound. I fear trying to cram
hundreds of E-types onto Laguna-Seca will test even the hardiest
cooling system. I had a pretty good stress-test last week when I
got caught in a Sig-Alert on the 5 South in Los Angeles at 2pm, and
literally drove 10 miles in one hour in 90-degree heat without
incident, so I guess I’m ready.
