[E-Type] Interior Kit Fitment Cost

Can anyone give me a ballpark cost estimate for what an Auto
Upholstery shop will charge to fit a complete interior kit,
including the top, into my '61 OTS.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I purchased my kit from OSJI, paid a local shop to install the seat
covers (~$500), and did the rest myself. It’s a big job. However,
according to their web site, OSJI will also do a complete
installation for your '61 OTS for $4000:

Kevin,

Do yourself a favor, and find a shop familiar with the car. I’ve
seen some truly hideous installs done by shops that haven’t done
them before. A fried of mine had a hood installed by a well-
regarded shop in the SF Bay area, and it was such a disaster, he
didn’t pay for it, and we stripped it off, threw it away, and
installed a new one ourselves a few weeks later. Even though
neither of us had ever done it before, it came out 1000% better
than the butcher job the ‘‘professional’’ did.–

The OSJI time suggested for shops to charge is 29 hours.–

Does anybody know of a shop in the South Bay of Los Angeles or
Orange county that is familiar with our cars?

If you have the time, I’d suggest taking a run at the
install of the interior yourself. I did the same as Bob,
and farmed out the seat covers and the center console (to
BAS) and did the rest of the interior myself. It is not
that hard at all. Basically, work from the outside of the
tub inward, as this is how things overlap. Don’t use the
adhesive you buy at regular auto parts places. I did that
at first, and ended up having to redo some things. Find a
local upholstery shop and buy some of the glue from them
that they use. It’s different and better than the 3M stuff
in the spray cans. On the sill covers, lay down some tar
paper first to provide a smooth surface for the foam and
vinyl, helps to conceal the wiring harness a little more.

I had a local shop install the hood, for about $1,000
including the cost of the top itself ($550). He knew what
he was doing and it turned out well. On the hood frame, I
recommend getting that powder coated, if restoration is needed.–
