[E-Type] IRS Order of Assembly

69 OTS

After many hours of painting, I am about to re assemble my IRS. I
know that sometimes the order of assembly of a group of related
components Must be done in a certain order. Other times, it is
just easier to do if an optimal order is followed (because some
things can get in the way of others).

After many hours of reading the various repair manuals the
following order of assembly seems to make sense to me.

Place rotors on diff output shafts
Attach calipers to diff
Attach handbrake calipers to brake calipers
Install diff to IRS Cage
Attach wishbones to mounting brackets
Attach driveshafts to differential output shaft
Install clamshells on outer drive shafts
Install hubs into hub carriers
Install hub carrier assemblies
Install radius arms
Install shocks

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,–

Glen,
You don’t want to bolt up the lower control arm mounts to the diff until you
have the diff installed in the IRS cage. There are shims that go behind the
mounts whose purpose is to align the fulcrum shaft holes in the mounts with
the holes that pass though the outside of the cage. When properly shimmed,
the fulcrum shaft will pass through the entire assembly with a minimum of
effort.

I didn’t install the hub carriers, half shafts, or shocks until the cage was
installed on the car. It’s all quite accessible afterwards, and it makes
the cage quite a bit lighter and easier to maneuver. The assembly will also
be in a fixed position then which makes it easier to tighten down all of the
fasteners.
Eric
