When I adopted my S2 back in June this year, the brakes would not
immediately release after application. After a few minutes, they did
release and all was well until the next application. This all occurred
after the car warmed up. The listers good advice was to replace the hose,
which I did-all three. Life was good.
Now a few weeks later, after a nice 20 miles drive today I had need to
apply the brakes and they froze-period. Stopped very well but did not
release as before. I exited the car and under the bonnet I relieved
pressure on the left front disc by openng the bleed screw. This provided
full release of the brakes. I did this again as required each stop until
arriving home. At home, After the car cooled considerably, the brakes
released from the last application.
Please give me your help again .
Fred,
Thanks for the tip. A good example of the value of this site. Just getting
started in this E society, I appreciate being able to query the group and
get real world hands on recommendations. Here I go to implement your
suggestion!!!

I followed the advice of Mike Clarke and I think you should also. Your
symptoms
are identical to mine and I resolved them by freeing up the stuck
actuator
piston located on the front end of the Master Cylinder. It required
disassembly
of the master cylinder and pushing the piston from it’s bore , A light
honing of
this bore was necessary. The brake problem is solved!

Following your advice, I have removed the forward piston from the master
cyl and here is my finding: The bore and piston are clean. The piston is
being restrained in the bore with a good amount of resistance caused by the
seals [2] on the piston. They bind in the bore as though they are slightly
oversize!! I will order a kit and replace them, but I now wonder how it is
that the seals appear to not fit properly?
Any thoughts, anybody?

What type of break fluid and how often have you changed what you are using?

Yes-yes, it was a no-no. Use Castrol to avoid swelling the seals. If you had to
add a lot, you probably had a leak anyhow.
Silicone is OK as well, but not without drawbacks.
Regular changes will remove water absorbed into the system. Annual changes are
probably sufficient, and perhaps excessive, but the fluid will cost about $5, and
any other brake parts are much more.
