I am not an engineer or a mechanic, but I have taken a lot of
things apart over my lifetime and put them back together with no
extra parts left over. So when I take something apart I believe
there is always a logical reason as to why something is made as it
is. Having a manufacturing background, I understand there a reasons
in the manufacturing process things are made as they are.
Well as stated in prior posts, my head of my 4.2 series 2 is off,
am waiting for parts, head gassket, studs nuts washers etc. Of the
14 head bolts there are 4 part #s 4 short stud at each end of
block with dowels, 6 long studs. 3 longer studs for lift hooks and
one more longer stud for hook with dowel, that cost twice as much.
Now I understand that the four outer studs with dowels are used to
position the head correctly on the block, but why the heck do they
need this one oddball stud ? This stud sit less than 4’’ from outer
doweled stud, and the hole is drilled larger at top of block, I
could understand if the had 2 doweled studs in the center of block,
I don’t understand the logical reason.
Also I noticed that 4 of the combustion chambers of head do not
sit directly over pistons, they are off-set, is this a carry over
from the 3.8?
