[E-Type] Jet Height in Stromberg / ZS Carbs

My S2 with non-adjustable Strombergs seems to run rich
(based mostly on plug color).

I first suspected the floats were set too high (and I will
check that) but then upon examining the jets I wonder if
someone has tapped them down a bit to richen the mixture.

Here is what I see when I peer into the throats (say ahhh):

http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?1465690441

I have nothing to compare those too so pray tell me – Does
it appear that someone has lowered the jets relative to the
bridges?

If they have and if this is a reasonable thing to do –
Does it appear they may have gone too far?

If a lower jet is desirable - What depth is typically used?

I am aware of the adjustable jets available from Joe Curto
and also the option of fitting parts from adjustable ZS’s
to make mine adjustable - but first I would like to try to
work with what I have.

Thanks for any advice.–

Geo

As per Joe Curto jet height should be about .125 or 1/8 ‘’
It is very difficult to adjust those pressed in jets.
Using a punch and tapping will destroy jet.
I installed the adjustable jets and now find with the use of
A/F ratio gauge that the 1/8’’ setting may be a little rich
depending on needle selection.
I also replaced original floats with the the new variety, more
buoyant.

Geo.

when I rebuilt my carbs on my 69 I measured the distance you
are looking at on mine, I came up with 0.101 and 0.102 from
the top of the brass jet to the floor of the venturi.
My carbs have the B1E needle, as yours probably do.

I recall reading someplace that this was close to the spec.
I don’t remember where I saw it, maybe the haynes stromberg
manual?

I also have a spare carb that I used for rebuild reference
that has a B1AR needle and that jet is only 0.087 down.

so clearly the jet height has a lot to do with the taper of
whatever needle we use, I suspect we could try a different
needle. this is obviously easier than replacing or trying to
force a pressed in jet up or down. The haynes manual lists
all the needles and their tapers.

the jets seem to be pressed in pretty tight, so I decided
against trying to fiddle with them, and I too am considering
going with Joe Curto’s adjustable units

If you are in doubt, call him. I did during my rebuild and
he spent 10 minutes giving me advice, a really nice guy. If
I were to contemplate a needle or jet change I think I would
call him and get his opinion , as whatever you end up buying
will probably come from him anyway!

In my experience it does appear that your jet is recessed
further than specification. As stated earlier, with the
stock needle the jet should be recessed approx. 0.100’‘. Joe
Curto recommends 0.125’’ for use with ethanol ‘‘enhanced’’ (yea
right- crippled) fuel. I would highly recommend installing
Joe’s adjustable jet conversion- high quality parts that are
a breeze to adjust.–

HI George, looks like someone has pushed your jets down.
When I was out there, I mentioned it looked like it was
running rich. The height of the jet is a design for the
proper atomization of the fuel. If the mixture needs to be
adjusted, moving the needle up and down is the answer.
Another thing to check on the cars running without lead is
the jet hole. With the carbs that use the spring biased
needles, they rub up and down causing the hole to elongate.
Once this happens, it is very difficult to get the mixture
set properly. At that point, you need new jets.–

Thanks for the insight & ideas. I had thought about needle
wear (as it is the spring-loaded variety) but now that you
mention it I can see that jet wear is more likely.

For now I have changed the floats from 16 mm to 18 mm
which is the spec Triumph used for the 175CDs. I will see
how that affects things before messing with needles & jets.–

Geo I got the later Stromberg adjustable pistons and needles
from Joe Curto that I dropped into my 68. I have them set full
lean and still looks a little rich when using my Colortune
tool. It is not as rich now though as it was with the non-
adjustable needles. Really runs good right now though so am
leaving things as they are for the time being. I don’t think
my jets are set as far down as what looks like in your photos
though.
