[E-Type] Leaded gas?

In reply to a message from cadjag sent Tue 30 Jun 2015:

Come on Carl, nice little holders for the sprockets, the cam chains
even stay on, 4 bolts there, after those cute little cam cover
bolts come off. Some head bolts, an exhaust nut or four, and some
oil banjo bolts. All you need is a two ton chain fall and it pops
right off.
What did you want~ a zipper?

I’ll admit its easier if you change the coolant a couple times a
decade.

None of these problems with a flat head, right?

Well, they did share one propensity! Busted studs!! Same
cause.

And, yeah, a flat head V8’s heads were not only much
lighter, even if iron and not alloy, the angle and reach
over the fenders/wings was much easier. And, to many of us,
no fenders/wings, even better.

But, I confess to never pulling a jaguar DOHC head!!!
Came close, but went in another direction…

I too remember the flatheads and stuck heads! The “youngsters” on this site may not believe this but I remember a friend whose late 30’s V8 had the Ford HC Denver aluminum heads and he actually drove the car with no nuts on the head studs trying to get the heads to break loose, to no avail! He ended up breaking up the heads with a hammer and chisel, no air chisels then. I can’t recall if that engine ever ran again, but as used engines were next to nothing to buy it wasn’t big deal. I’m sure that you remember going to the junk yard to buy a transmission, Fords went for $15 in the Detroit area, and if it looked like none of the gears were chipped it was a deal and guaranteed all the way to the junk yard gate! I still have a rod out of the 274 inch Merc that was in my 39 coupe that ventilated itself at the old Akron drag races. Those were the days and thanks for bringing back memories!

Bob, I remember needing an engine for my Pontiac one
time…so I just went and bought an old rusty but running
Chevy for $20, pulled out the 283 together with the 2-speed,
put the whole thing in the Pontiac and scrapped the rest.

Yep those were the days! On the other hand, while looking back “at the good old days”, I tend to forget that while I was building that full race flat head I was also working almost full time for $1.25 an hour at a gas station while going to high school!

Yeah, and you could put a dollars worth of gas in the tank
on Friday night and you were good for the weekend.–

Just saved for the next 30 years and bought an E! In reality I poured it into the next project, 302 Jimmy in a 39 Chevy coupe. When the flat head blew at the Akron drags we had to go to the local junk yard to get a tow bar welded up so we could a tow get home! Gosh I’m glad that Carl keeps brings up things that jars my memories of how things were!
