[E-Type] leather seat cleaning

I just purchased an xke roadster 73 v-12 4 sp with 27k miles. While
near perfect, the leather seats are soiled. I used a leather
cleaner bought from an auto store but after trying it on a small
spot, I noticed the tan leather turned somewhat brass colored. Q;
How best to clean these seats, what to use, etc.??, without ruining
them?

I've had really good luck with some stuff made by Meguiar's -

It’s one of their ‘‘Gold Class’’ products, and contains Aloe. I
don’t recall the exact name but it comes in a clear plastic bottle,
and the stuff itself is a translucent pale blue. It can be hard to
find, but well worth the effort. Cleans and softrens really well.–

Congrats on your new kitty! Enjoy it. The V-12 roadster is a
great car. You might want to post a couple of pictures to the
website. What color?

There are a number of good products for cleaning seats and
restoring the leather. I’d avoid the cheap stuff that you find in
your local auto parts store. Check out Leatherique
(www.leatherique.com) or Leather Renew (www.leatherrenew.com).
Both offer kits to clean and restore the leather. If the finish on
the leather is coming off, the answer is to re-dye it. Both
companies offer kits to do this and can color-match your existing
leather.

Hope that helps.

Lace,

Here’s the (defunct) Connolly company’s recommendation:

Work up a lather on a face cloth with Ivory soap (i.e., simple soap
not detergent, no perfumes, etc.) Wring it out so it’s damp and
soapy. Use this to clean the leather, rubbing where necessary to
get stuff out.

Wipe the lather off with a damp, non-soapy cloth. Let dry a little.

Treat with Connoly’s Hide Food.

They say it’s the dampness that really softens the leather, and the
hide food’s purpose is to retain it in the hides, like moisturizer
on milady’s face.

All that said, I have used Ray’s Meguiars Gold Class Rich Leather
Aloe Cleaner with toothbrush, works very well to remove visible
dirt from light colored leather, and moisturizes to boot.

For conditioning, Hide Food or Lexol or Leatherique works well, but
you really have to try Gliptone conditioner. It’s unsurpassed. In
addition to doing a great job softening the leather – and keeping
it soft over the very long term, it restores the luxurious leather
smell that really enhances the ambiance of any leather interior.

It’s really the only thing I’ll use, and every time I get in the
Jaguar, the BMW, or the Volvo, that great aroma provides comfort
therapy. Some will tell you that other conditioners also restore
the smell, but I have cared for many leather interiors and I have
tried every serious leather conditioner several times… never had
anything like this Gliptone. You’re missing out on a great aspect
of your car if you have not tried it and the leather is more than a
few years old. Only available from SNG Barratt or by mail order
from them as far as I know. Ads in every Classic and Sports Car
issue, and elsewhere.

I have owned horses all my life and had to take care of saddles and
bridles worth thousands of dollars, and the best thing to clean
dirty leather with is Kirk’s Castile Soap.
It is very mild, and has coconut oil in it.
I would follow any cleaning of nice leather with either Lexol,
Tattersall’s or a bar of glycerine saddle soap.
Lexol also makes some nice leather cleaners.
DO NOT USE Neat’s Foot Oil, it will ROT your stitching.

I happen to know that many of the SOVERN car owners in this area
buy all their seat cleaning supplies at the local Tack Shop.–

May I add.

The neatsfoot oil (pure) is fine, but the compound (contains
petroleum products) is what rots the stitching–

I have used plain old saddle soap for cleaning various cars with
leather interiors with good results. Jerry mentioned above that the
conditioning products work by holding moisture in and Constance
recommends saddle soap with glycerine - makes sense, glycerine is a
humectant, it absorbs moisture.

We have lots of baseball gloves in our house, a couple of good
ones, and I swear by mink oil for breaking in a new glove and for
keeping it supple. When I recently purchased seat covers for
my '67 OTS I noticed that some residual contact adhesive was
visible along one of the seams. The supplier told me to use
mineral spirits to clean it off. Sounded a bit harsh to me so I
took out the mink oil and with a little bit of rubbing it took the
adhesive off and also softened the leather quite nicely.

Any of you leather experts have an opinion on mink oil as a
conditioner? One last comment, years (like 25) ago I went to a
leather shop looking for something to soften my dried and hard MGB
seats. They sold me this French stuff that came in a tin and
smelled like bacon fat but boy did it soften the leather. Have no
idea what it was, though.

Smells WONDERFUL.

It’s always been our policy that vendors can participate as enthusiasts. They are welcome to offer advice and help and occasionally mention their product as long as they don’t go overboard with it.

We don’t want the lists to become a free targeted tool for vendors so we don’t allow them to mention sales, prices, or especially, “I have it in stock, call now, Visa, Mastercard accepted, etc”.

It’s OK for them to add a signature line with their name, company and telephone or e-mail as long as it doesn’t exceed 4 or 5 lines.

We just don’t want every message from them to be a blatant advertisement for their company or products.

All,

To second George’s potentially bias opinion of Leatherique, I have
used his products. The conditioner is exceptional. I have an XJ6
VDP and a basket E-type. I used the conditioner on the XJ6
regularly. It is the standard recommendation on the XJ list for
leather conditioning. I also used it on the E seats prior to
packing away until reassembly.

I picked up a spare seat while I was redying my leather in the
XJ6. The change in the leather was astounding. I recommend it to
anyone needing to treat leather.
