Good evening Listers,
I have offered comments on this in the past and the best that is said is that opinions vary.
Here is mine. Lock washers do not work. If a fastener comes loose a lock washer may delay the failure of the joint but for likely a short period of time in a vibration environment.
The fastener must be set/torqued to make it hold it’s items in a properly designed joint. If the issue is critical nylock nuts or elastic nuts are a very good idea. If wired and the fastener comes loose then properly installed lock wire may hold it in place to finish the drive/race/flight.
In 40 years of race cars we used the proper nuts and then wired and or used red Loctite or both. We had a high finishing rate. Error on the side of least regret.
