[E-Type] Lock washers lock wire

Good evening Listers,

I have offered comments on this in the past and the best that is said is that opinions vary.

Here is mine. Lock washers do not work. If a fastener comes loose a lock washer may delay the failure of the joint but for likely a short period of time in a vibration environment.

The fastener must be set/torqued to make it hold it’s items in a properly designed joint. If the issue is critical nylock nuts or elastic nuts are a very good idea. If wired and the fastener comes loose then properly installed lock wire may hold it in place to finish the drive/race/flight.

In 40 years of race cars we used the proper nuts and then wired and or used red Loctite or both. We had a high finishing rate. Error on the side of least regret.

Hi Edward et al, MUrphy’s law is valid and will remain in effect for time immemorial or until we ruin the planet and we all perish, whichever comes first. It is immutable and constant. We have all been subject to its insidious idiosyncrasies.

Question or ignore it at you own peril.

Brian
