[E-Type] Looking for an early 3.8 e type engine-matching number value

Nick,
Even tho I prefer matching numbers and like stuff to be original
you’re absolutely correct that the condition of the car is waaay more
important. As a point of interest I recently happened to see a JDHT
document for a car that had its engine replaced under warranty, it was
noted on the certificate. That was a first for me and wonder, if
there is a value to matching numbers, what does that do? My guess is
with factory documentation like that its as good as matching.

There is a distinction to be made between matching engine
and matching numbered engine. The recent Keno brothers
offering is a case in point. From what I understand the
replacement block was period and model correct and the
head was the factory original. Which is to say the engine
assembly is indistinguishable from factoy original save
for the number originally stamped by an anonymous worker
into the block above the oil filter - which can’t be seen
at all with the intake manifold in place. There is no
number at all stamped into the block of the Keno offering
because it is a period-dated and otherwise identical
factory replacement. It will be considered a lesser car by
those for whom the abstraction is important and who are
prepared to pay a premium. I submit matching numbers are
not nearly as important as overall condition, quality of
the fit, finish and period fidelity of the restoration.
There are doubtless plenty of matching numbered cars out
there that wouldn’t fetch a fraction of the hammer price
of the Keno car.
