[E-Type] Machine Shop in S.Ontario?

Anyone know of a good machine shop in S. Ontario where I can
get some head work done on my E Type? Or failing that, a
shop in the north east, Upstate NY, Pa, Mi?

I didn’t get much confidence in any of the local shops I
called. A typical conversation goes:-

XK Jaguar engines, sure, we do them all the time. That’s the
12 Cylinder, right?

Er, no, it’s a straight 6.

OK. But it’s the 4-valve, right?

Then another guy, when asked how he would install the valve
seats:-

We just press them in.

Er, don’t you need to heat the head first?

No we never do that because it causes too many problems.

Then I discovered that some of the machine shops don’t even
do this kind of work themselves but send them out to
specialists who they won’t name. So any suggestions would be
appreciated.–

Clive,
Any reason you don’t want to send it to an expert like Bill

Clive,
I found a machinist in Syracuse who will do what you ask.
If you tell him what specs you want for say, valve to guide
clearance or you want a .060’’ 45 deg cut for the exh. seat he’ll do
it. All my shims are within .005’’ of each other: .098’ - .103’’
No grinding of stems or other such BS. He rebushed and checked my
rods for alignment as well.

Just a podunk little shop, with supercharged BB chevy boat motors,
aluminum dirt track motors, a few diesels lined up for work. Pretty
cheap too.

But as Ray points out - you can’t go wrong with Bill Terry. As a
matter of fact I bought all my parts from Bill.

The take away here is if you’re willing to educate yourself as to
what a Jag head needs - my guy will do it. If not - send it to a
pro like Bill T or Rich O. or Dick M.

Thanks, guys. Shipping across the border is a pain. Not like
shipping within the continental 48. Somewhere close enough
to actually take the head and then broker it back myself
would be OK though.

And John, yes I know those guys in Stoney Creek. They
actually did my engine balancing and the previous valve
guide job. But they also send out the heads for installation
of new seats -won’t say where, and they don’t really know
the engines either. Nothing wrong with their work, but I’m
just looking for a specialist to do the machine work and
I’ll do the re-assembly and setup myself.–
