What is the consensus of opinion regarding locking down the caps?
My understanding is that originally locking tabs were used and then
later (what looks like) a plain washer.
Am I best off using locking tabs and if not, is there something
special about the washers?–

Angus,
The tabs are a pain, and if you don’t replace them with new ones, you run
the risk of them snapping off. The washers actually are special. They are
dished lock washers. They are easy enough to come by, and can probably be
sourced from the local jag parts counter since all the later engines used
them.

I think things like tabs and cotter pins are things of the past. Just
clean everything up real good and use a product like Loctite. Use “red”
on the big ends. That’s what I would do.
Best.

I’ve been looking at restoration pics and in several cases I’ve seen engines
apart undergoing a rebuild, with apparently a fresh coat of some RED paint
on the inside surfaces.
can anyone explain what it is and what it does? is it a rust inhibitor? is
it useful on any kind of engine and parts?

Angus,
I’d go with Red Loctite.–

A bit of asparagus-beet soup may also work.

He tried to impress her. He was courteous and surprised her. But he knew the relationship was doomed when she tasted his home made asparagus-beet soup and made the same noise as a cat with a fur ball.

Diego,
Believe that is glyptol or gliptol (sp). It was a factory coating to seal up any porosity in the block and I understand it also aids in oil drainage back to the sump. Seems its either impossible to get the stuff or if not impossible very dear.

Well, it’s not impossible. Eastwood carries it. It’s $42.99 for a
quart or 12.75 oz aerosol. Go to http://www.eastwoodco.com/index.jsp
and search for glyptal.

Angus,
When I first stripped my engine there was split pins through the
studs I spoke to our friend Dave Williams and he said to use the
new locking style nuts and used on the XJ6 or some other Jaguar it
might have been.
He had some in stock and sold me them but any Jaguar main stealer
should have them for an extortionate fee:-)
