[E-Type] Mallory distributor (UK)

I’ve been searching magazines in vain for the last couple of days
for an advert I saw a few weeks ago for Mallory distributors for
the XK engine @ 135 or so - does this ring any bells with anyone
and, if so, who was advertising them ?

Having at last got our E Type on the road I find the dissy is quite
worn so the Mallory seemed not only cheaper but also probably a
better solution than having the old one rebuilt - any disagreement
with this idea ?

I’m pretty sure it was SC Parts:

I saw the same ad.

In fact I can do even better than that:

You’ll need to copy the full address as I think the board only
hyperlinks the first line.

Why wouldn’t you want to run a distributor from a Series II or III
XJ6. They’re easy to come by at the salvage yards and fit
perfectly.–

Anthony,

What is wrong with your dizzy? A Petronix unit will clear
95% of the problems. Without having to find a $peciali$t
when it is time to replace the cap, rotor and bits.

The otherb 5% can be addressed by a dissassembly, cleaning
and lubing.–

Anthony,

I was thinking the same as George, there’s a bunch of us over here
running Pertronix with the Flamethrower coils.
Cheap at about 40, 70 with the coil, easy to fit and reliable.
You can get them direct from Aaron at Coupers cars in the States.
Instead of messing about with huge url’s try tinyurl turns large
url’s into small ones like this one for Coupers cars

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the replies ! Yes, now you say, you remind me that
it was SC Parts so I’ll have a look at their website.

Never thought about an XJ dissy ! What’s wrong with ours, George &
Dave, is that there’s a lot of slack everywhere and it’s very
difficult to set the timing correctly, my mate Chris who restores
classic cars said he couldn’t get it much better without a new
dissy.

Whilst I like the Pertronix, having one in a 3.4 Mk2 and a Mustang,
it presumably cannot compensate for that amount of wear, can it ?

Regards to all,

Personally, I’d find a way to repair the Lucas, or get a
replacement, like an XJ6 one. I’ve heard too many complaints about
quality problems with Mallory dizzys the last few years. A friend
of mine finally just resolved a long-standing rough idle problem
that turned out to be an erratic Unilite module not switching
consistently. While it always fired, so there was no problem
evident using a timing light, it sometimes switched slowly, giving
a weak spark. The effect was only visible on an ignition scope.
Lot’s of people have had multiple consecutive dual-point condenser
failures, and at least one vendor has complained about very poor
quality control on the mechanical components.–

In reply to a message from Ray Livingston sent Sun 30 Oct 2005:

Just fyi - I also recall that one vendor in the US pointedly
complained about the Mallory Unilite quality, and said he was done
selling them. He is now selling them again.

If you do go the Unilite route, be sure to buy the advance curve
kit (29014). The Unilites come stock with a very conservative
advance curve. But don’t get carried away - it is easy to set the
Mallory up with an aggressive curve that will cause pre-ignition.
That’s not a quality issue, just how you set the curve.

Btw, for those in the US, Century Performance has reasonable
prices. NAYYY.

If you get an XJ6 distributor, also get the ignition module that
goes with it. The electronics inside that module are nothing more
than a Delco ignition amplifier - common as can be and not
expensive.–

Anthony,

First of all I would consider your choice of suppliers!!!

SNGB will do a replacement dizzy or rebuild yours for 150. If
yours is that bad then just hand it in and get another one, there
are others who will also rebuild your dizzy such as Holden.

I never considered an XJ one since my car is positive earth and I
don’t know it will work OK.

about Holden myself so will give them and a few others a call in
the morning.
