Okay, everybody sit down for this one…
I get most of these types of items at THE DEALER! Yes, either
Galpin Jaguar in Van Nuys or Silver Star in Thousand Oaks (mainly a
Mercedes agent, but they also sell Jaguars).
Keep in mind these same parts were used on the XJ-S until sometime
in the 90s. I usually just give them the part number and don;t
tell them what car it’s for. This way it is a factory quality part
and I assume meets the engineering specifications. I do this with
virtually all my suspension parts, brake shims, exhaust manifold
fasteners, cylinder head parts, etc… A few years ago I was even
able to get brake reservoir bottle switches (not the bottle itself,
but the low fluid indicator switch that is immersed in the bottle),
all over the parts counter.
The Metalastik parts from the dealer are substantially stiffer than
the units I’ve seen from some of the usual suspects. I’ve also
seen correct factory parts from the usual suspects as well, go
figure.
FWIW, my rear axle is pretty damn well located! I flog my car
pretty hard, it spends a good deal of time ‘tail out’.
