[E-Type] MIG-no aircraft content

About five years ago I purchased a Century “Quick Fix” wire feed welder
with a duty cycle rating of 20 at 75 amps. It comes with .030" flux core
wire. I am just now getting around to setting the machine up. My
question to the weldors on the list is this: Should I bother to spend
$90 for the CO2 conversion? I understand that, in addition to being able
to weld stainless and aluminum, even simple mild steel welding is neater
and easier. Any other advice about the use of this tool is welcomed.

Please do not ask me questions like “What do you intend to use it for?”
or “Do you have any idea what you are doing?” I am presently in a tool
accumulation mode.

Thanks in advance,
Randall

Randall, By all means obtain the gas conversion kit for your MIG welder. Keep
in mind that you will also have to purchase or rent an argon/CO2 tank to go
with it. The gas conversion will allow you to make cleaner welds on thinner (
i.e. 20 gauge E-type) metal. The argon/CO2 gas provides a barrier around the
weld area that reduces the typical slag that results, as well as allowing you
to weld thinner sheet metal. The flux wire you currently use will still be
appropriate for thicker metal.

My father gave me one of these. It’s pretty light duty and the flux core
mode leaves a pretty crusty weld of minimum quality and penetration. The
Bare wire set up with CO2 or other gas mixture is ok for body panels and
tacking. If you plan to weld any thing that will be subjected to any kind
of loading, especially a part your life might depend on, I’d only use this
machine for tacking and either get a bigger welder or take your work to
someone that is an experienced weldor with better equipment.
