[E-Type] MIK Jaguar Crunched!

Yesterday on the way back from the autocross I ran into the
back of a Subaru. In a line of stop and go traffic, the
line suddenly stopped but I couldn’t. Top of the bonnet is
crunched, but the internal frames look OK so far. The
engine started and ran fine, oil pressure was OK, but the
radiator was hit and coolant ran out. The car ran under
the Subaru’s bumper, so there was no major impact. I
didn’t even hit anything inside the car, and so nobody was
injured.

Hagerty has given me a great immediate response, and said
that there was no deductible on my policy. They would
settle the claim based on the initial estimate by Images,
which will start when they get in today. Perhaps if I am
lucky it will take a new bonnet and a minor repair to the
edge behind the bonnet. Could be more involved of course
as the inspection continues.

Boo Hoo! Most likely won’t make the BCOL, but we’ll see.

The firewall area does not look bad from what I can see in
the pics. That’s a good sign. Looks like MIK just scooted
under the rear of the Subaru?

Glad you came through without physical injury. Sheet metal
can be replaced or repaired.

Whoa! No injuries, that’s the main thing. Perhaps
radiator and bonnet mounts. And MIK is now a tad more
aerodynamic. Here’s to a speedy recovery.–

Thanks for all the kind words, friends.

I just got back from Images, and Dave Ferguson says he can
get the car finished – like new – before the BCOL! We’ll
see, but he already has a new bonnet and all new engine
frames, as well as the other parts needed as far as he can
tell. Hagerty is being great and work with Dave all the
time. Dave pointed out that given the disassembly required
I could add a number of nice improvements on my own dime
that are easy and cheap under the circumstances (new cad
plating on the suspension, new clutch, new front seal, new
windshield, etc.) I hate to lose the patina under the
hood, but the concours look is another nice one.

If I had to do all these things (which I had not expected
to do for 10 more years) it would have taken me years.
Done to perfection (or similar) in a month? Yeah, I’ll
take it!

Jerry,

OMG that’s awful. I’m most glad you weren’t injured. I
guess that generous crumple zone did its job satisfactorily.
I can’t recall whether you already raised your coverage or
not, but even if you were still around 60K you should be
fine. Worst case here I’d hope would be around 30-40K.
I’ll be surprised if the frames were unscathed but maybe you
got lucky and the geometry was just perfect enough to only
crunch it at bonnet height. It warrants deep inspection.
It looks like you might have gotten really lucky with the
limited bulkhead damage. Hopefully none of the places where
the frames attach got pushed back.

It’s a real shame in any event given how original you’ve
kept it under the bonnet to this point. In my limited
experience with Hagerty, they’re going to make this as pain
free as possible for you, so that’s a bright side.

While your memory is still fresh, do you remember if the
brakes locked up or were they just not up to the task, or
did you brake late? I’ve always found stop and go freeway
traffic to be really challenging in these things since
you’re lower than just about anything that might be in front
of you, except another old sports car. Amazingly though,
most often, it’s the person behind me locking up brakes and
that totally freaks me out.–

Bright side is you’re ok. Anything that you can fix is not
all that serious. It’s the stuff you can’t fix that messes
up your life.–

In reply to a message from Erica Moss sent Mon 15 Jun 2015:

Erica,

Yes valuation was upped to $65K. Dave was kind of
horrified because he said it was worth more (he appraised
it at $105K a few months ago) and if the front had hit a
bumper and mashed the frames into the bulkhead, it would
have cost that to fix it.

Frames, Dave said they had no strength downward and he
would want to replace them under these circumstances. The
motor mounts had broken and the motor crunched into the
picture frame, so that was ruined. The front bonnet frame
was bent on the driver’s side. All to be replaced, but
bulkhead mounts all OK.

Brakes were applied firmly but I did not lock them – I
just braked too late. No complaints about the brakes at
all. The hard braking lowered the nose even more and
probably eased the burrowing under the Subaru. I glanced
down at the instruments or radio for a second and when I
looked up the cars were dead stopped ahead. Definitely my
fault. So glad nobody was hurt.–

Yes, good that you raised your insurance. (I did too about

like say $30k, the insurance would just pay out in full and
keep the car.
