Hi fellow listers.
I would like to update you all on the progress of my
car. I joined this list about 16 months ago when I
began trying to repair (note I did not say restore) my
67 Coupe. Much rust, brakes and suspension problems
had forced me to park her about 12 years earlier.
You’ve heard this story from others. Are E types the
most “parked” of the classics? Anyway joined the list
and started tearing her apart. Bought a bunch of
parts in the hope that I could do the work myself.
Well, the mechanical tear down went smoothly enough
but it seems the rust was much worse than expected.
New rocker panels on the outside hid huge horrors
inside. I had started welding on ugly patches and was
unhappy with it all. I knew I was not able to do the
whole floor, inner/outer sills, trunk floor routine.
After some off list conversations, I decided that I
needed professional help, no not a shrink, but Jaguar
mechanic type help. It seems that my car was built up
from an earlier body shell and later engine, matching
numbers was not a consideration. So, I have
contracted with Waterloo Drivetrain systems to salvage
and install my useful bits on a much nicer body shell
that we got from California, rebuild the engine and
everything mechanical, and put in a new transmission.
Yeah, I am replacing all the body panels. Seems
unbelievable to me too. Waterloo has posted some
pictures on there web site if you care to take a look,
its at:
Scroll down to the “Michael’s car” section. So some
day soon I will have a car that “just” needs a new
interior, paint, A/C assembly, etc. But should be
“rust free”.
Wish me luck,

Congratulations Michael!
It was good to see those pictures on Waterloo’s website.
It will be even better to know that you will have an E-Type to drive sooner
rather than later!
It's nice to hear that another one will soon be on the road. It always
seems to be easier to take 'em apart than to put 'em back together.
Sometimes a new bodyshell is the only way to go. You’ve chosen a good shop
to help you.
BTW, I'm using a Waterloo TX51 in my lightweight. It should be a good
substitute for the original ZF 5 speed. John’s also making me up an
aluminum driveshaft and a widened rear suspension.

Mike Frank

It is good to hear another one will be salvaged. Good luck on your
project.

Just like to point out the nice article and pictures in BBC Top Gear
Magazine - April 2000 issue. Nice pictures of Tony Parkinson’s Low Drag
E-Type against a Cobra. The Low Drag sports a race prepped JT5.
Thanks,
Paul
