[E-Type] My E type wanders

G’day all you E type experts.

I’ve had my SII 1970 for about 16 years and it is disconcerting to
drive above about 60mph because it gets the front end wanders. I’ve
tested it for rear end steering and I don’t think that is the issue.

I would really like some suggestions as to what to look for. I know
first step would be a steering geomotry test. Well I went to this
old bloke who does this the old fashioned way without computers. He
said there was too much movement in the steering linkages
(including the rack bushes even though they were replaced with OEM
parts some 8 years ago and the car has done little mileage).

The silly old bugger was grasping each wheel in turn and reefing it
about to test for tightness but he musn’t have noticed the steering
wheel moving and therefore being responsible for most of the
perceived slack in the system. I’m thinking of getting some poly
bushes so he won’t have any excuses.

The toe in is fine with no unneven tyre wear. Could the wandering
be caused by either camber or castor being out? The tyres are new
and properly balanced.

I hope someone can take the time to offer suggestions.

Peter,

Just to be sure, you have checked your tire pressures? 32 psi all
around.

Worn rubber in the rear suspension, or broken IRS mounts or worn
half-shaft U-joints are all possible causes. Tire read separation
on one tire.

Front suspension bolts have to be tight. Worn ball joints in the
front (your buddy might be feeling that). Front wheel bearing too
loose.

The toe could be out enough to wander and still not enough to show
wear.

Peter, I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my brand new
steering rack mounts. The rubber had completly separated from the
steel. Have now installed solid aluminium mounts.

What tires do you have? My car came to me with 215/65 Yokohama AVS
tires, and it behaved HORRIBLY on rutted pavement. It would seem
to jump sideways to ‘‘find its groove’’, much more violent than what
I’d call ‘‘wandering’’. New Vredestein 185-15 tires totally cured it.–

If it was Series 1, I’d check the rack mounts, which are very often
wrongly mounted. But I have no idea what the S2 system looks like.–

Peter!
This is just an idea, but how long has it been that the
prop. shaft ‘‘U’’ joints have been serviced. That might lead
to wandering.

Thanks to everyone for their replies re my ‘wandering’ E type. I’ll
admit I really haven’t spent much time studying the problem
including checking all the things that have been mentioned. That’s
what comes from having too many toys!

The tyres are new (18 months and 205 X 75) and I usually run 30 psi
(but who has a truly accurate gauge?).

The IRS has been out 3 times in the 12 months (- therein lies
another tale for another day but nothing to do with the car
wandering I think). Most things renewed - radius arm bushes;
brakes, diff bearings and seals. A bit of movement in the hub
bearings on one side though as mentioned I have tested for rear end
steering and it seems ok.

You would think that even if there was some slop in the steering
geometry that with the car static you could at least pick up if
camber, castor or toe in was out of spec and investigate from there.

If ever I sort it out I’ll let you all know

Regards
