[E-Type] New here, but sincerely shocked Headlight Cover Doofus?

Hello!

I am new here and have an S2

I had heard that someone in Germany designed a headlight cover kit.
So I wanted to get some feedback here and am truly shocked.
How is it that Randy H. can refer to the vendor in Germany as
a Doofus here in the forum? When signing up recently, I read and
agreed to the forums rules and guidelines. Derogatory comments
about members and vendors are not permitted. It cannot be
that Wiggles then comes up with an acronym D.I.G. to describe
Mr. Wahl as the Doofus in Germany.

Not a very good initial impression of this forum, I must say.
But, consider the source
Randy did not even like the idea of headlight covers in Dec 2003.
Then waited for his wife to (as he puts it) sign off on the
absurd headlight conversion for my S1 (?..S1.5 maybe) in January
2006. And, initially seemed very happy with is purchase thereafter.

Being that I live in Stuttgart, Germany, I have since spoken to Mr.
Wahl personally on the phone and purchased a kit. And, this without
having to first get my wife to sign off or approve what I buy.

Mr. Wahl does not come across like a Doofus to me.
Rather a competent designer and inventor, eccentric in his ways.
Jaguar Heritage Mag even likes what he does.

Maybe the forums administration should take note of such
derogatory entries made by people like Randy and Wiggles who seem
to have nothing better to do

With all due respect,
Charles–

Hi Charles, Welcome to the Jag Lovers forum on E types. If you are
able to stick around for a while I think that you will find that
this forum is extremely helpful to all posters, and in the main
folks are quite polite. From my perspective you have been
unfortunate in your first visits to find a ‘‘chink in the
armour’’.While I can understand your concerns about improper
comments, these are somewhat on the mild side I think, as doofus
and eccentric are not in any way strong language. While I have not
really folowed this topic , I believe there May be some background
which others MAY share with you off list. From my perspective I
find the product most likely of high quality, and certainly
somewhat on the high side price wise–

In reply to a message from Tom Felts sent Sun 15 Apr 2007:

My wife, staff, secretary, clients, they all call me Doofus! Why?
Because it’s 5 AM PST and I’m already in my office on a SUnday
morning some 340 miles from my home! Boy am I a doofus.

I’m the guy that purchased the headlight ocver kit from Randal H.
Randal shared soem history with me about the purchase of the
headlights and taking his side for a moment there did appear to be
some resistance on Stefan’s part – remember all Randall wanted was
the correct version for his Ser 1.5.

Anyway, I emailed and called Stefan last week – about the kit. In
his broken English he provided me with references here in the US –
even offered (for a price) to upgrade the kit to the concours
quality (more about that later). All in all I found him very
reasonable to deal with. He even followed up by having his english
speaking assiatnt email me as a contact point for technical
information. All in all I get the sense, now having spoken to both
parties, that this was a case of ‘‘lost in translation’’ mixed with
equal parts of Germanic and Yankee righteousness and
inflexibility. I think everthying would have resloved itself had
they been able to meet and clearly discuss the matter face to face.

As for the concours kit – the kit I got from Randy was the basic
kit – when I pulled it out of the box I was not too impressed with
the quality of the aluminium (Brit car). My 70 OTS is really
cherry – see it on XKE vin 1R11325. Anyway, with a little hand
polish in a matter of seconds I was able to get quite a sparkle –
so I know that once buffed on the machine it will look pretty damn
good. I’m disappointed that the chrome does not match the width of
the Ser 1, but there you are.
One other thing, I purchased this car in SLC last year. The body
was restored by someone who apparently had won several concourses
for his work on E-types – and to all appearances my Jag was yet
another example. Imagine then, my disappoinetment when we pulled
off the eyebrow and found that while the paint under the eyebrow
was new, they’d put back the chrome before applying clearcoat –
there are other things and if anyone is looking at a Jag restored
in Salt Lake City, please contact me privately.

Charles,

First, welcome to the forum. You will find a wealth of
information and experience here from people all over the
world.

Second, my advice (take it or leave it-it’s free!) is to
relax, sit back for a while and read everything posted here
and do some searches for past postings. Maybe read through
all of the recent postings about the various backgrounds of
people here. I believe you will find that this forum is like
a big extended family, with different personalities and ways
of expressing themselves. Communication is difficult enough
face to face, but when you add in different languages,
cultures, and only written messages it is easy to find
insult and negativity—if you look for it, or can’t
overlook a little. It’s a lot like a marriage (don’t tell
her I said that!).

Third, sometimes someone here might say something sarcastic,
or even out of anger (heat of the moment) and then a gentle
reminder to that person usually is enough to set things right.

Again, welcome to the forum. I’ve enjoyed traveling in your
beautiful country several times and have experienced the
wonderful hospitality of the people there. All except for
one really angry guy in Dresden, but I choose NOT to dwell
on that and instead focus on all of the fantastic people I met.–

Hello Charles

I’m sorry if you were offended by my reference to that
fellow in Germany. I did not use his name on the Forum -
now or ever. And I selected a descriptor that should not
have set off alarms. Yes, I do consider myself a Doofus much
of the time as well. Never the less, you were offended and
if Stefan was, I apologize to him too. Stefan and I have
some extensive history. We came to a very disagreeable end
over this transaction. I did not bring it to the Forum, he
did.

In a situation like this there is always a back story. I
urge you to do a Forum search and you will quickly
understand the circumstances surrounding the ‘‘deal gone
bad’’. Meanwhile, my new friend Tony now owns the headlight
covers that were made for a Series 2 car (mine is a S1.5)
and other than a couple hundred dollars of shipping fees, I
have been made whole. I wish everyone well and am relieved
that this nasty bit of stuff is over.
Best,

however that all is going well (apart from needing soem clear coat

I’m very glad to hear that the conversion is going well.
It’s good to hear that you’re recieving some assistance from
Stefan also. The instruction manual for this conversion was
thin.

To Abner and anyone else that is curious, this headlight
cover conversion was clearly advertised and sold to me as a
100% reversible modification. This was extremely important
to me. Upon receipt it was clear that in order to do the
conversion on my S1.5 car, a body shop would have to cut
away a portion of my bonnet. And then a complete bonnet
repaint would need to be done. Not exactly reversible I
would say. This is not the case for S2 cars and that is why
the conversion should go well for Tony.

The quality of the components for the kits look just fine to
me. In fact, when done I think the look will be better than
original (think Ferrari), though not original looking.
Something to consider: If a car with this kit installed has
front end damage, a new kit will have to be fashioned from
scratch as the parts are only avail from the vendor and each
is made to order. That’s why if I do decide to convert my
S1.5 car in the future, I’ll have it done to original Jag
specs - just in case.

My acronym was indeed a (generally) List-acceptable way to
refer to a previous poster’s designator.
I stand by my use of it and my position vis-a-vis what Randy
Harris has stated. There was indeed a backstory to all this
and I was ‘subject’ to some of the ‘discussions’ between Mr.
Wahl and Mr. Harris. I did NOT, quite intentionally, state
or speak ill of Mr. Wahl in a public thread, because I value
the List and wish to see it thrive for all future users.
Once you hang around (if you hang around) this list, I’m
sure you’ll find ALL to be reasonable, open to constructive
criticism, and ultimately, all have the best of intentions
in matters of dealing with vendors.
And with all circular respect, I welcome you to this list!–
