[E-Type] New here, but sincerely shocked Headlight Cover Doofus?

In reply to a message from polestar sent Sun 15 Apr 2007:

Hello again,

Thank you for all your responses to my inquiry!
I am quite pleased that this community does answer promptly and is
so friendly. My weekend was rather busy

You all have more than answered my questions and concern.
This is all a bit new to me as I have never taken part in such a
forum before. Bought the car over Christmas. Then, my wife said she
likes the way the front end of her brother-in-laws Series I
looks, more like a racing car. They live in Denmark. He was the
one who told me of kit guy rumoured to be in Germany.

It is a bit disappointing that people like Jerry and Lynn seem to
think I am some sort of spy or something. Sorry, but I am not a
car buff like most of you seem to be with my 42 years on the
planet. Just wanted to invest in a classic car that would increase
in its value over the years. And, make my wife happy.

And, no, I am not related to Mr. Wahl in any way. There was a link
to his webpage here in one of the entries about headlight covers or
so and I just put two and two together that he must be the kit
guy. There does not seem to be anyone else in Germany who
manufactures such a kit or is there? I then had the man on the
phone and tried to understand about the Best Buy kit with the
polished lenses compared to the standard kit. Told him that I came
across him through a family member in Denmark, doing a google
search and doing research in the forum. He told me of a recent
misunderstanding with regard to the installation process regarding
a Series 1.5. The bonnet having to be cut and such and that this
would not be necessary in my case. My mechanic here in Stuttgart
will install it when it arrives. It should be here this week I
hope. Like I said, I am not as well versed as you gents seem to be.

My background is half British and half German. I live in Stuttgart
with my German wife. Therefore, I guess I can understand the
cultural differences and language barriers better than most.

Not sure if I will hang around as several of you have kindly put
it.

I can now see how negative rumours get started here and it really
does not make a good impression on me as someone new here who is
also shy and not well-versed on the topic at hand.

Thank you anyway for all the positive feedback!

Cheers,
Charles–

not be the kit in question but the car number is 1R10225. I am more

Pictures are on
XKEDATA 1S71947. I liked the look of the covered
headlights, but the kit is on the expensive side.

I gotta say, they sure do look nice. I significant improvement over
the S1, which I’ve always thought looked a little kludgey. These do
look very elegant.

Charles, hang around. Like any community, this one welcomes both civility
and candor. Sometimes the jokes don’t work, tempers flare, and feelings get
hurt, but it’s all pretty insignificant compared to the thoughtfulness, help
and enjoyment that we enjoy in great measure here. You bring an honest
persona to the group, and that’s always good. I am confident you will be
treated well and will contribute to the group by staying with it. At least
that’s been my personal experience.

Charles,
As you have discovered there can be cultural differences, exacerbated
by email format. One can not always tell exactly how a point may have
been given or received. I’ve been “hanging around” for 7 or 8 years.
Have seen people come and go but in nearly every case welcome here.
We have a passion for the cars as a common thread, beyond that we’re
all different folks and as such don’t necessarily understand some
positions taken, wrongly or rightly. When that happens assume the
best, 99% of the time you’ll be accurate. Having some history here I
can say with conviction no one was trying to offend anyone else tho it
surely happens by accident. If you’re not comfortable posting no
problem, I believe we have more lurkers than posters but as an E-type
owner, congratulations on your new baby, you’ll get much more good
info here than bad. Sorry if we didn’t appear like a welcoming group
but in honesty that’s not the real us. On the other hand as old salts
here you can’t blame us for being somewhat skeptical either, we’ve
seen some hoaxes. In the end the skepticism is good because it
protects the group… and hopefully that includes you.

In reply to a message from Charles64 sent Sun 15 Apr 2007:

Charles-

Welcome. As an internet junkie, I view hundreds of forums
but choose to participate in few. One reason I participate
in this forum is its universal acceptance and tolerance of
differing opinions, usually in good humor.

By strict definition, I suppose Doofus is derogatory as
Webster defines derogatory to be ‘‘1. tending to lessen or
impair; detracting 2. disparaging; belittling: Also derogative’’

However, if that definition were strictly adhered to here,
there would be no room for any level of criticism or less
than neutral opinion. Perhaps a better interpretation of
what should be prohibited would be ‘‘malicious,’’ which in
context I do not believe the term Doofus would qualify.

If we were to be as strict as you suggest, this forum would
be of little value and no humor. For example, your own post
includes the comments, ‘‘Not a very good initial impression
of this forum, I must say. But, consider the source’’ and
‘‘I have since spoken to Mr. Wahl personally on the phone and
purchased a kit. And, this without having to first get my
wife to sign off or approve what I buy,’’ and ‘‘Maybe the
forums administration should take note of such derogatory
entries made by people like Randy and Wiggles who seem to
have nothing better to do’’ It is not much of a stretch to
interpret these comments as lessening, detracting,
disparaging, or belittling Randy or Wiggles and thereby
place you in violation of the very rules and guidelines you
cite, with all due respect.

As long as people are people, they will have differing value
systems and achieve different results when applying their
value systems to objects such as a headlamp cover kit. If
we become so thin-skinned as to no longer tolerate those
differing results, provided their expression does not turn
malicious, then this, or any other free speech forum, will
become worthless.

Good luck,–

How is it that Randy H. can refer to the vendor in Germany as
a Doofus here in the forum? When signing up recently, I read and
Not a very good initial impression of this forum, I must say.
But, consider the source
Maybe the forums administration should take note of such
derogatory entries made by people like Randy and Wiggles who seem
to have nothing better to do
With all due respect,

Charles
I’m sure there was no malicious intent
words do have different meanings all over the world
hood/bonet,boot/trunk for example
how a banger became a sausage will alwasy be a mystery to me
this is a very good group a people here, always willing to help
I’ve learned more accidentally here than on purpose reading books
browse the archives a little bit & see how helpful people are
plus you learn so much else because of how the threads can wonder
from the original subject to something else
that’s one thing that makes this group so interesting
stick around for a while before you make a final decision
people do get picked on here, but always in a friendly manner

Welcome to the list and I commend you on your most noble
purpose to make your wife happy. She’s got an eye for the
race car look, which means the E-type is perfect for her.
I’ve been on the planet almost 46 years now (born the same
year as the E) and participant of this list for over 7
years. It’s a great bunch of folks and knowing them has
helped me enjoy my E-types more than I ever could have
without the support and guidance I have found here. Overall
positive experience in the 99.99% range.

Don’t be shy, we won’t bite. :-)–
