In reply to a message from Andrys Posthuma sent Mon 7 Dec 2015:

I have to agree with one of the comments made in this link;
‘‘Hopefully this doesn’t destroy Martin Robey’s business’’

There would be virtually no E-Types left if MR hadn’t been
supplying panels since the 80’s.

I expect Heritage are only back because of the big buck’s in
E restoration now.

No affiliation etc.

My new bonnet is from Jaguar Heritage. David Ferguson, who
has a lot of experience with replacement body parts, says
that the Jaguar part is higher quality than earlier
replacement parts, presumably including Martin Robey.
Better fit, less adjustment, and very well primed (electro-coated).

Absolutely anyone can get stuff digitised these days and Jaguar
Heritage are not bringing anything new to the party other than the
word ‘‘Jaguar’’. No doubt they’ll charge for this. If they
overcharge, then the next person can simply buy one panel,
redigitise it and offer it at a more competitive price. The cat is
truly out of the bag and they have been very late coming to the
party.

Operative word being ‘‘can’’. Price for my bonnet was very co
competitive and apparently one thing Jaguar Heritage brings is
is better quality, as I said. Late quality is still qu
quality.

YMMV ; -)

In reply to a message from Paul Scott sent Mon 7 Dec 2015:

One hopes Martin Robey made a profit all those years and will
continue to compete. I’ve used many of their panels and have
been mostly satisfied. Their quality has been acceptable but
where they have particularly stood out is their offering of
almost all the individual body panels for the E-type. They’ve
been facing selective competition from the likes of Monocoque
Metalworks and E-type Fabs, both of whom have a reputation for
higher quality. If we have another quality competitor in the
game it’s a good rather than a bad thing imho.–

Hi Jerry,I am surprised about the bonnet manufacture,I thought
that Abbey Panels, the original supplier to Jaguar still made
these?

Gerry,

Going back to the original article in this thread, it does
not actually say where and how the panels are made. Other
articles have mentioned that Jaguar Heritage re-acquired
the original tooling, elsewhere that Martin Robey had done
the same. Of course Abbey Panels did supply the original
panels for the car back in the day. Subcontracting is and
has been pretty common.

But I am not aware of having seen Abbey Panels referenced
before in regard to current panel manufacture for E-Types.
What have you seen? Anyone know the actual facts? Neville?

In reply to a message from MarekH sent Wed 9 Dec 2015:

Marek,

‘‘Digitizing’’ is now easy, and relatively cheap. Making the
stamping forms necessary to actually produce panels is
anything but. While prices have come down dramatically over
the last decade, making a set pf stamping forms for
something the size and complexity of a bonnet wing or center
panel requires a VERY substantial investment. And then
there’s the cost of the very large stamping press required
to actually stamp out the panels once you have the forms.–

Hi Jerry have read various stuff in Jaguar World over the years,a
lot could have changed since, even read in one article that the
original tooling is well worn and that the new bonnets are not as
good as the originals? Not the case today, if yours is anything to
go by.

Regards Gerry.–

In reply to a message from Ray Livingston sent Fri 11 Dec 2015:

There’s a lot more to it than just someone copying the shape
of the panel an making a ‘‘duplicate’’, regardless of the
necessity for building dies etc.

There’s the proper metallurgy that’s required for the panel
but also, there’s the proper finishing. Jerry said that his
bonnet was e-coated and if true, that is a big plus, not so
much because of the e-coat itself but because of the
comprehensive rust inhibiting pre-treat of the metal before
the e-coat can go on.

(I spent 30 years designing the industrial factory
installations for pre-treating steel and aluminum ready for
painting and properly applied epoxy e-coat is currently the
best primer you can get.)

I don’t know what Robey uses these days but when I did my
car with his panels, I’d simply wash of the ‘‘shipping’’
primer with lacquer thinners down to bare metal and do the
pre-treat and epoxy myself. Lacquer thinners won’t touch
epoxy e-coat.–
