[E-Type] new MR floors and radius arm bushing

Did I miss something when putting in new floors?

I put in new MR floors and outer sills with the car jacked
up on a dolly with the IRS in situ. I had the IRS jacked
firmly to the dolly so it wouldn’t be hanging just on the
driveshaft and the mounts. After fitting new front and
rear bushings to the radius arms I put antiseize on the
domes and put them back in place. I never undid the IRS
mounts, nor the drive shaft. Even though I had to pull
forward to get the bushings/arms settled, everthing seems
to fit nicely. I have the car back down on its wheels, but
I haven’t torqued any screws yet, because I haven’t been
driving yet. Three new engine mounts fitted.

Should I have somehow loosened the driveshaft before
getting the arms back in place? Or will I have pressure on
the driveshaft going forward since I pulled the hubs
forward to get the bushings to fit?

Thanks for any comments. I haven’t driven yet, I still
could rectify.

I had to use a come-along winch to pull my radius arms in
line with the cups. Others will probably chime in but I
think that is normal.–

normal that may be, it’s been mentioned a lot.

I think what I wanted to know is if the driveshaft has a
sliding function fore/aft, to take up movement between
gearbox and IRS. Otherwise, when pulling the radius arms
forward I assume I was putting undo pressure forward to
gearbox and new engine mounts?

If my driveshaft has that sliding function but has been
fixated after mounting the original IRS, I surely didn’t
open that up before fixating the radius arms. Hence my
worries.

Thanks again.

Martin,

It would seem to me that the driveshaft sliding joint
behind the transmission should take up any fore and aft
maneuvering of the IRS needed to fit new radius arm
bushings, assuming hubs get pulled forward and the diff
comes along for the ride. Once installed, arms and the
diff would return to their normal positions.

Some day I’ll re and re mine and find out for sure.

Martin,

Your driveshaft has a sliding spline joint, as illustrated in
Figure 2, on page G.4 of the Service Manual. It will be fine.

You don’t say whether you replaced the radius arm cups along with
the floor.
As long as the cups remain in the correct position, everything
will be fine.
I don’t think that you can pull the drive shaft far enough so that
the splines will disengage, so that should be fine too.
If you have any doubt, jack the rear wheels up and turn them with
the gearbox in neutral. If the drive shaft has separated it will
be quickly apparent.–

Thanks everyone. The spline shaft takes the movement,
that’s what I needed to know.

I replaced the complete left and right floors. When
talking with MR about the floors they advised to have the
new cups riveted in place at MR, before shipping. So
that’s what I did. Floor fit was very good. Measuring the
thickness, the originals seem to be thicker.
