very smartly! When I bought my first Honda CB-750 back in 1969, I
remarked that it had two less wheels and 3 more HP than the current VW
‘‘bug.’’ That always made me smile.

Yup… I’m sorely tempted to put one of the Formula S engines
in the Sonett but… well… it’s such a good show car and that
will kill the points. As it is I have ‘‘improved’’ the output
in the stock engine…

Shame they weren’t using Klotz, at 100:1…woulda gotten rid of
that smoke and, on my dynoand witha stocker Deek, that alone was
good for another 5-7 HP.
Love that sound!!!

It’s that ‘just to be sure’ that causes smoke. Remember, in the
day, the oils they used were the best available but NOTHING nearly
as good as modern ones.
MUCH better lubrication, and when warmed up, no smoke, AT ALL.
You will be AMAZED how much better the engine(s) run!
For that matter, any good modern 2-stroke oil, run at 40:1 is MORE
than enough lube. 32:1 is jsut too rich in oil.–

Be careful Lester - you wouldn’t be the first stroker fan to seize
a hard-run engine by putting too much oil in it.
The jets can only pass so much liquid and more oil means less fuel
means weaker mixture can mean burned piston or seizure if you are
unlucky and hold WOT for any time.
Not especially common, but just sayin’ ‘more equals less’ if you
get my drift.

Oh yes… big problem for newbs. Mine was smoking as it had
to idle for a while waiting to get up the ramp and then the
fellow who tried to pull it up the ramp didn’t seem to
understand the concept of increasing revs. He tried to get
that car up the ramp at idle… pffft. If you watch the
smoke clears out nicely after a bit. That car in fact is a
newer design that runs oil injection, not like a motorcycle,
but it has a set of passageways cast into the block and a
pump that squirts a small amount of oil to every bearing and
every cylinder and to the distributor gears every so many
revolutions.
