[E-Type] orienting dizzy shaft

This is almost frivolous, but not meant to be. Just not dead
sure. Green manual, p.b-4, fig 16, slot on the dist. shaft:
this is looking down on the shaft from the front of the car,
with that slot sitting at about 10:30, correct? I can’t
bring myself to finish that locking tab without making
really sure I am not misconstruing it. Thank you.

Bruce, It’s not really quite that simple. If you look very closely at the top of
the shaft, you will see that the slot is slightly offset from center, so it also
necessary to make sure that the shaft is oriented exactly as show in the Manual.
If you don’t get it just right, you can correct the problem by reorienting the
plug wires on the distributor cap.

Larry, thanks for your reply. I have the offset correct,
but the longer I looked at the picture the more if-y I was
about the vantage point of the picture – i.e., where the
camera was looking FROM. I’m pretty sure it is looking from
the front directly back toward the firewall, making the slot
sit at the 10:30 - 5:30 slant, with the slot away from the
engine. I’ll go have a look at the direction of the rotor
with it set the way I have it now. thanks again

Now I’m confused! I thought the perspective of Fig. 16 on
page B.24 of the Service Manual is from the SIDE as if
you’re standing over the front right wheel. I ‘‘think’’
you’re looking at the front right engine mount bracket
below and the water pump to the right of the distributor
drive?

Can someone confirm? I’ll be at the same place Bruce is at
in a few months.

Also, is there anything to be gained by dropping the dist
in and checking the cap for the next ignition event? #6 at
TDC of course.

Thanks–

In reply to a message from golfnut324 sent Wed 15 Aug 2012:

Craig, that is what I did last night. I went from the
assumption that the picture was looking from the front of
the engine; put #6 at TDC and dropped the dizzy in place.
That put the rotor pointing basically at #6, which is where
I understand it should point.

Just make sure you have enough room to properly rotate the
distributor for adjusting the timing. I had mine in where I
could ‘just’ get to 10 degrees BTDC before the vac advance hit the
water pipe for the heater so I rotated the wires by one space to
give me more room for adjustment–
