Lilsmoke:

Curious as to why you want an original battery. I have purchased,
in Canada, a battery that is close to the original dimensions in
terms of upper surface area, but is a lot shorter in terms of
height.

If you are seeking that additional 1/100 th of a point with regard
to JCNA, I believe they have accepted that the battery is a
replacement item, and as Lucas is no longer available, therefore a
similar substitute is allowed.

Take some measurements; length and width, then check with your
local battery suppliers. Top post cable mounts are required; side
mount posts are hidden.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

I believe the closest modern size is Group 35, at least that’s what I
use in my '69. You can find a list of dimensions for all BCI codes here:

http://www.rtpnet.org/~teaa/bcigroup.html

Get a plain black battery, peel off the labels. Buy a $4 Lucas
sticker from any of the usuals. Poof…it’s as original as it needs to be:

Mike, you had mentioned the Exide Orbital battery a couple of years
ago in a post, how did that work out?

Mike Frank wrote:
I’ve finally found the perfect battery for my E-Type. It’s an Exide
Orbital. It uses similar technology to Optima: absorbed electrolyte,
recombinant valving, pure lead. Like the Optima, it can be turned
upside down without leaking. Unlike the Optima, it comes in a plain
black case. Peel off the Exide label, slap on a Lucas sticker, and it
looks just the part. Size is Group 75, which is the same as Group 35
but with both top and side terminals. The side terminals face the
back, you can’t see them at all when the battery is in place. The top
even looks like a tar top. Warranty for 84 months, and just $65! The
perfect battery for road or concours. It doesn’t get better than
this! http://www.exideworld.com/products/light_truck/

The one I had in my car died, not through a fault of the battery, but
my bad. I was doing some soldering on the fan resistor, and a bit of
hot solder fell on the case. Burned right through. Then I bought a
replacement, but I sold that to someone who had a battery emergency.
Then the offroad truck place near me that carried them went out of
business. So I now have a regular battery.

Thanks Mike, I was thinking about getting one but the price is a bit
steep at about $160.

Is there a difference to the S 1.5? A couple of years ago we found
that the 1999/2000 (I think) Range Rover battery is an almost
perfect match and the poles were even correct. Not that you’re
going to save a great deal of money by sourcing a Range Rover
part…

Just ask for a group 35 battery (that’s the size). You could also try
a group 75 or a 22L, depending on what’s available.

Lilsmoke,
I cut a 1/2" piece of plywood to sit under my battery but you could make any thicness you like. I like the idea its not sitting directly on the metal as well.

If your battery is sitting directly on the steel shelf, that’s a
problem. There should be a plastic battery tray, with a drain. Repros
available from the usuals.

Why not be even safer and place the standard plastic battery tray (available from the usuals) between the plywood and the battery?

Actually the battery is sitting on wood which is sitting on plastic. However, that plastic tray (complete with drain tube) was custom made for me by a friend who did sonic welding of plastics at work. The car didn’t have a plastic tray when I got it and this is the first time I ever heard there was one originally! Dang! Goes to show you what I know.

In reply to a message from R. Bruce Cox sent Fri 31 Mar 2006:

AFAIK Bruce, the plastic tray (rounded corners, hard black material
with about 1/2’’ deep raised edges) was standard, but who knows if
they were cutting corners by 72?

The drain tube fastens over a short moulded spout which protrudes
about 1/2’’ downwards. The tray can be fitted back to front and I
wouldn’t mind betting that careless routing or absence of this
hidden little drain tube has rotted out more than one sill or
firewall, by directing water/acid mixture onto structural steelwork
at the frame fixture, instead of safely below it as Jag intended.–

Hmmmm. Mine had a plastic tray, which was cracked. I ordered a
replacement from SICP (I do miss them), seemed to be a stock item.
