[E-Type] Original Style Battery

Actually the battery is sitting on wood which is sitting on plastic.
However, that plastic tray (complete with drain tube) was custom made
for me by a friend who did sonic welding of plastics at work. The car
didn’t have a plastic tray when I got it and this is the first time I
ever heard there was one originally! Dang! Goes to show you what I know.

Don’t feel bad. When I saw the price the usuals wanted for those
plastic trays, I used a spare tray from my Datsun 240Z parts collection!

I’ll have to look but I think the Nissan version was only about $12 new
and have a molded fitting on them to attach a piece of plastic tubing so
you can drain any overflow away from the metal.

I’ve also seen something similar in the battery section at Auto-Zone.

OK, I looked in one of my Datsun catalogs and Victoria British has them
for $4.95. Maybe next time I order some Datsun stuff I need to get a
half dozen or so?

Here’s the “correct” part from the XK Unlimited web site:

#1. BATTERY TRAY PN: C16473 Desc: PLASTIC, E-TYPE
Price: $ 22.90 / Each

The inner dimensions given in the XK’S catalog for the e-type tray is
9-1/4 inches by 6-3/4 inches.

Hi All,
My son needed a battery for an old ‘junker’ car he bought recently so
this gave me the excuse to get rid of a poorly fitted battery in my
'68 and try one of the Exide Orbital ‘gel’ batteries. As Mike had
mentioned in a post a couple of years ago they are black and if you
squint a bit could pass for an old style tar top battery. It fit
perfectly without the need to modify the hold down bracket, the down
side? Mike mentioned that he payed $65 for his a couple of years
ago, this one was $135 US! With a newly restored car I could easily
rationalize the cost having had to replace a sill and battery tray
from acid corrosion due to battery spill overs during the restoration
process. Aside from the cost these aren’t a perfect battery, they
are easily damaged from over charging so one has to be careful but I
have had a spiral wrapped battery in my '73 for almost 4 years.
Cheers,

The one I had in my car died, not through a fault of the battery,
but my bad. I was doing some soldering on the fan resistor, and a
bit of hot solder fell on the case. Burned right through. Then I
bought a replacement, but I sold that to someone who had a battery
emergency. Then the offroad truck place near me that carried them
went out of business. So I now have a regular battery.

Mike, you had mentioned the Exide Orbital battery a couple of years
ago in a post, how did that work out?
