[E-Type] OTS: Off Topic, *Sorta*...;) Funny Ford Issue

So, I’ve got a problem and I thought I’d poll the brain
trust to see what you all might think: I’ve seen more than
my share of weird car issues but this here’s a new’un…;(

Patient: 1974 Ford F350, XLT Camper Special, 460 engine.

Symptom: Trucks been running fine ever since I got it, and
this AM, after a 75-mile run to Ft Collins (to p/u new Rover
parts, for my new Rover), on the way back the PS/WP belt
goes ka-BLOOEY. On I-25. At 75 mph.

Limp (read: coast AFAP, run long enough to get up to speed
again B4 overheating, repeat 3 times) to a nearby NAPA, buy
a belt, borrow a wrench, stick it back on.

Initial diagnosis: rotten old belt that’s fossilized
(shoemaker’s son, blah blah blah…). Take off for home,
fat, dumb, and happy. Except for…I cannot exceed 40 MPH,
lest the belt start screechin’ like an injured barn owl.

Poo.

Limp home at 40 MPH, check belt tension…s’good.

??

Take off belt, check that WP turns freely (check), PS pump
turns freely (check), and that fan clutch is good (check).
Tighten the POOP out of the belt (thinking old, worn
sheaves), STILL cannot exceed 45 mph (~2000 rpm) lest
belt…well, you know.

Check all three belt sheaves for post-squealing hotness, and
it’s the WP that seems to get fried…??? Recheck WP
again…turns freely, no tightness. Ran it w/o the fan
clutch/fan on…same ting, Olie!

Ideas?? My thought is something in PS circuit (steering
box?) that isn’t ‘venting’ pressure for PS circuit at higher
speed.–

Wiggy,
Will the symptom appear while not driving… neutral, rev the
motor… if so maybe you can tell which pulley is squealing. Is the
alt. on this belt too? I’ve seen with my own eyes those slip at
higher rpm while working perfectly at idle.

Well… after swapping out the PS pump—no joy— it turned out to be something in the steering box… problem solved!

Then, I got summarily dismissed from USGS, in 2013, due to the last time Congress couldn’t pull its finger out of its collective arse, and sold the truck.

Story complete.

That has to be some kind of record for a protracted, very short two-way conversation, but glad to see you two are talking again

Oh, @paul_spurlock was one of the JLers who stayed in touch with me, during my hiatus.

Shorted diode/s in alternator can cause lots of drag, but only at higher speeds like you are seeing.

It wasn’t the alternator.
