[E-Type] Out the bottom engine pull

Well I am all ready to pull the engine on my 67 OTS. Everything has been
disconnected except the front mounts. Only one problem. I cannot see how
the bell housing will clear the ears on the lower frame rails where the
torsion bar lock plates go. It looks to me like there is just not enough
distance between the ears to allow the bell housing to pass between on the
way down. I know I have seen listers describe how they have done it, and I
do not doubt that it can be done. Just please tell me how before I start
wrestling with the engine on a transmission jack tomorrow night by myself.

Thanks
Dennis Eklof

Dennis,

Don’t recall the details of this particular area, but the
general observation is that it caused no problem at all,
so much so that I did not even think of it beforehand and
was not sorry.

Dennis,
I wouldn’t say that it’s a problem, but it’s a bit fiddley. If you’re
concerned about scraping paint, have a helper handy to carefully jockey
and reposition the lump as it’s slowly being lowered, because as you
astutely noticed it isn’t going to go straight down. It has to do a
little side to side dance as it goes. It can be done by you alone of
course but it’s more stressful.

Also having the engine damper and water pump pulleys off will give you
the greatest amount of play.

Thanks. The pulleys won’t be a problem. The picture frame is off as I am
installing new rails.----- Original Message -----

I’ve dropped the engine through the bottom twice in the last several years
with no problem. First time to install an aluminum flywheel and now to
replace the frame rails. I dropped the engine before starting to remove the
bonnet support, picture frame etc as you have more room to get at the nuts
and bolts. The pulleys were no problem either time and if there was a
clearance problem in the reaction plate area it was so minor that I don’t
even remember it. Hope you made a drawing of all the clip locations, makes
it easier to put back together. When you’re putting the reaction plate back
in DO NOT drive the bolts in, if you injure the threads, especially on the
upper bolt which is always the tightest with little finger room, you’ll
never get the nut back on. Unload the suspension first and they’ll slide in
with your fingers. You’re welcome to contact me direct as I’m doing this job
right now.

I just did it. It fits. I even had the clutch slave and tubing attached and
the exhaust manifolds on. As well as all the pulleys attached. Because of
the clutch tubes I had to do a little manuevering to clear the frame.

My search for a FHC continues and I am looking for a referral to a shop or
someone who could reliably inspect an E for me in Lubbock, Texas. I might
be able to convince the Seller to travel a reasonable distance to get the
car inspected.

As always, thanks for the help,

Jim
