[E-Type] Outer fulcrum shaft

Really?
‘‘Centralize the carrier between the wishbone’’?

Do y’all actually do that?–

Hard to imagine you could anything else. Or does this
refer to having an equal amount of the fulcrum shaft
sticking out of each side?–

yes.
you don’t want to pinch the wishbone when you torque the
outer fulcrum nuts and of course you need to maintain the
pre load which presumably you have established in accordance
with the workshop manual.–

Yes. At least, I do. There is a tip on how I fit the correct
number of shims to avoid closing up the wishbone in IRS
section of my website.

In reply to a message from Bill B 2 sent Fri 13 Nov 2015:

Bill,
There are two types of shims fitted on the outer fu
fulcrum shaft: The ones with the smaller OD are used to set th
the preload, these go between the bearings, the ones with th
the larger OD are to take up slop between the ends of the wi
wishbone and the bearings in the carrier.
The meaning of ‘‘centralise’’ is that you put the same t
thickness of these outer shims on either (outer) side of t
the bearings. This is presuming that your wishbones aren’t b
bent out of shape, and that the machining of the hub c
carriers is symmetric to its C/L.
That is how I understood it.

David,
I see how you got it in between the ears but do not see where
you added tiny thing shims between the ‘‘seal retainer, seal
track’’ and the ears to put the casting precisely in the middle
of the wishbone ears?

Nice to be in CA where when you open the garage door, 200 lbs
of oak leaves don’t blow directly into the garage.–

In reply to a message from Bill B 2 sent Sat 14 Nov 2015:

Bill,

I just responded to your other thread. I hope this answers
you question. I chose to place those shims behind the
outermost component (I can’t recall whether it is an oil
seal track, washer or what) of the line of components that
go along the shaft inside the hub carrier. That way, the
fragile shims are protected when the carrier is inserted
between the arms of the wishbone. This approach necessitates
a 2 step approach. First fit the shaft and spacers, torque
the nut and offer up the carrier to the wishbone to measure
the gap that must be filled with shims. Having done the
measurement, I then removed the shaft again, added the shims
under the outermost washer/seal track, and then reassembled
the package (with spacers) for the final fitment. Hope this
helps…

As you say, not a lot of leaves blowing into the garage here
in California. Makes for a clean(er) garage…
