[E-Type] overheating troubleshooting

came upon an interesting problem last week end… no not on my car… but
talinkg to a guy at the Celebration FL concours. he had a series 3 OTS, and
was complaining that he couldn’t drive the car as much as he wanted because
it’s always running hot… despite new pump, hoses, recored rad, Tstat…

We talked about various issues and he mentioned that the car runs cool over
40 but gets too hot idling. We decided to compare fan flow… after runing
mine, we moved to his car, and on the driver side, flow was identical.
before he turned it off, I checked the passenger side fan… was running
backward… Of course, he had checked that but only from his side, never
walked around the other side…

Who had a problem like that ? Mike (Eck) ? bottom line… check the
obvious first !

Yeah, that was me, except I had both fans running backward, giving a
different symptom. So has anyone figured out why some fans run backward?
Was it a practical joker at Brown’s Lane?

Just switch the wires and they will run forward. At least this was the
case on mine.

I was looking into s3 fan problems and found a De Tomaso Pantera has the
same motor and there’s a good page on refurbishment:
http://www.panteraplace.com/page115.htm

There it says that reassembling with the 2 halves of the casing 180
degrees out of alignment will cause the motor to run backwards…?

I purchased new lucas motors, not quite the same as the originals, and
they have the wire colour-codes reversed…

Christoph,

The old square motors won’t work that way. However they
are wired, they turn the same direction. I had to return
a replacement motor because it was a backwards runner.
