[E-Type] Premature death of an XK engine

In reply to a message from Nck sent Sun 19 Jan 2014:

Neither Carsten nor his machinist trusted the
specification supplied by Mahle, a company in their own
country who gave repeated plain assurance that the spec
was tried and tested to be correct. I was sceptical myself
until I heard those reassurances, at which point in the
absence of any other dimensional data besides the single
criterion of skirt clearance, I might have obeyed their
instructions. Having done so, I’d have gone after them
big-time if it had seized, but it’s such a stark-staringly
obvious risk area that if the maker says X who am I to say
Y? Which leaves only the variable of how competently the
block was bored and the engine assembled.
