[E-Type] Radiator Cap improvement

I am considering installing a lever type radiator cap ( 16
pounds)in hopes of lowering running temp. Also, a coolant
additive. Any feedback ?–

The radiator cap makes absolutely no difference whatsoever in
running temp, unless it’s not holding pressure at all.–

As Ray says, the radiator cap is not going to change the
running temperature but you will need to change the hoses
for new if you are going to run at a high pressure.
Water-wetter does work as an additive and can reduce running
temperature by 5-10c. Worth adding as a safety net if you
are caught in heavy traffic.

Increasing the rating of your cap will increase the boiling point of
your coolant, but will have no effect on running temperatures. You
may find that the extra pressure is a good way of locating leaks.

In reply to a message from Harms sent Tue 19 May 2009:

As others have pointed out it does nothing to change running temp
but will raise the boiling point. And as Mike slyly points out the
added pressure may create leaks where none existed before. The
chief benefit of the lever cap is that it allows you to
depressurize the system without scalding yourself while the engine
is hot.

If your engine is running hot enough to boil over with the standard
cap it might be more beneficial to concentrate on tracking down the
source of the overheating instead.

I’ve never been all that impressed with Water Wetter, but many
swear by it and it won’t hurt anything.–

Can you be mpore specific on the nature of your cooling problem?
The stock cooling system for the Series 3 provides perfectly
adequate cooling for all street conditions if set up properly. Both
fans need to be operating, the shroud has to be in place, etc.–
