[E-Type] Radio Speakers for S1 3.8 Console

I am having an extremely difficult time finding
speakers to fit my S1 3.8 console. Has anyone replaced
their speakers recently?? What did you use? Thanks,

Hey John,

This very question was raised, maybe a year and half ago. If you do
a search, you should find quiet a bit of dialog. I had the same
issue for my 67 2+2.
Good Luck!–

Larry, I successfully installed a set of Blaupunkt ODx652 in my 4.2
console. See my photo albums for some detailed pictures. I bought
the speakers on ebay.

Larry,

I have the '64 radio console – like the 4.2 version – and it’s
quite different from the earlier one. I just installed Infinity
component speakers – tiny tweeters separate from all-bass
woofers.

The woofers went into the console, the tweeters went on the top of
the dash – but there are several places they can go. The results
are great! The stock mounting muffles treble sound because it is
directional, but the tweeters up to give you the full sound. The
bass is non-directional and so with two woofers in the footwell
it’s fine.

These woofers are too deep to fit on the inside of the console, so
I mounted them to the outside with their own covers. Christoph
Widmer’s experience convinced me that you can easily go back if you
want the stock look. Or you could mount them to the outside wall
of the footwells without cutting as there is a hole there already.

YMMV.

Many thanks to Ken, George, Christoph and Jerry, as
well as anyone I forgot to mention, that responded to
my posting regarding speakers for my S1 3.8. I had
checked the archives before posting my question, but
didn’t really find much help. I have the 3.8 console,
which as mentioned, is different from the S1 4.2
console. The speaker openings in the sides of the 3.8
console measure 4.5" with the mounting studs on the
factory chrome speaker covers being 4.75" center to
center. I don’t know the measurement for the S1 4.2
console, but I believe that the dimensions are larger.
I located a reference to Blaupunkt ODx 652’s in the
archives, but they are 6.25" speakers, so it would not
appear that they would fit the 3.8 console given the
dimensions stated above. I also trial fitted some 4"
speakers, but as might be expected, they did not even
fill the speaker openings, although the mounting stud
pattern was fine. I’ll check into the Pioneer
TS-A1057’s that George mentioned, but don’t quite
understand how a 4" speaker will do the job. Do any of
you audiophiles know what the speaker dimensions
actually refer to? In the real word it does not appear
that a 6.25" speaker really measures 6.25" at any
dimension??? This is just crazy, people have been
putting speakers in the S1 3.8’s for over 40 years!
How came I can’t find ones that will fit?..please be
nice in answering that question.

John,

I have the same early 3.8 console. I used speakers from the same Blaupunkt ODX series which were like 4 or 4.5". Sorry can’t remember the number off the top of my head, but if you search the archive on Blaupunkt and my name you’ll probably turn it up as I’ve mentioned them a few times here.

BTW, they sound like crap! Not the speaker’s fault since it’s a combination of being underpowered from the 40 year old radio, and having no isolation whatsoever from each other. Just thought you should know before spending $50 on them.

Hi Eric, Yes, sadly, I am prepared for the crappy
sound. That just adds to my frustration in locating
suitable speakers. I’ll check the archives again and
see what I came up with. thanks,

Larry,

Mount them on the outer walls of the footwells. You will have to
cut holes in the Hardura, but you can replace that pretty cheaply
if you decide to go back. And if you want good sound you’ll need
those tweeters up out of the footwells or at least pointed at your
ears. Maybe mounted at ear level just behind the doors.

Larry,

I had the same problem finding suitable speakers for my ‘62
OTS. I located some no longer stocked ‘‘Radio Shack’’ speakers
that fitted perfectly. They are 5 1/4’’ diameter, 60-watt, 20
watts RMS, dual cone, 4-ohm-impedance,part number 40-1423. I
used them with my Blaupunkt radio. You might want to check
in your area. If you strike out, send me an email off line.
I bought two sets. Don–

Jerry, I really don’t spend much time listening to the
radio, except on long trips, even in a car with a good
sound system. I’m really looking for something to fill
the holes in the console, as I’d rather listen to the
engine. Also, the car is a '61 flat floor OTS so I am
keeping it original within reason.
I’ve got to admit that it makes me crazy sometimes
when people (even some on this list) say that a car is
devalued because it doesn’t have the correct gearshift
knob or some other similar BS.

Larry,

Why not make a factory style plug that just covers the radio hole?
Grilles should look the same whether there are speakers inside or
not. I am sure someone on the list can post a photo of their
console plug.

They are a perfect fit for the 3.8 console but (there is
always a but!) the chrome rings do not line up with the
mounting holes, hence the silver grills may not fit you
would have to use the supplied black ones or have them
chromed. Worth buying a pair and seeing if they could be
modified though - $30 to find out! There are very few 5’’
speakers available today - they are all 5 1/4’'.–

David, I have been corresponding with Charles @
Woody’s about these very same speakers! What I have
been trying to figure out is if the speaker mounting
holes could be redrilled (without ruining the
speakers) to accept the chrome factory grills. What is
your opinion on this?

In reply to a message from JOHN KOHLER sent Sat 12 Jan 2008:

Drilling new holes in the speaker chassis is no problem - it
is only sheet metal and will not affect the sound as long as
you do not damage the cone or rubber surround while doing
so. I would be tempted to buy a set and see what can be
done. My guess is you will be able to do a decent job. I
have fitted a pair of Sakura XS65 (6 1/2’') to my 4.2 console
and that involved drilling new holes in the speaker chassis
to get them to fit on the mounting bolts. As you are finding
out modern speakers tend to be on an alloy cast chassis and
almost as deep as they are wide with heavy magnets. This
means they will not fit in the standard console and clear
the transmission tunnel. These speakers are old school and
hard to find.

Go on be a devil, buy a set, find out and post the results!
If you succeed you will be a forum hero as no one seems to
have found a satisfactory solution to replacement speakers
with sufficient handling power to be heard in an E-Type
without distorting. I winged it with a radio from Woody’s
and as you can see in another thread the results were excellent.

Regards
