[E-Type] Re: [E-Type Transmission mount washer and cotter pin

Mike Winney wrote about removing his sump and mentioned the washer and
cotter pin on the underside of his transmission mount. My 69 OTS with
manual transmission did not have this washer and cotter pin when I
bought it. I did notice it at the time and felt it was just a device to
keep the mount from popping off if you removed the engine from the
underside.

Can anyone advise me on this ? Is it needed and if so why? Are there any
other parts required? Are these special parts ie some sort of hardened
cotter pin?

Your help as always appreciated.

Stefan Roundy if you are reading this do you have these parts?

Dennis - To be more specific re this, I am looking at pg #7, plate #1 in the
Spare Parts Catalogue for the 4.2 E Type. The assembly is called the
“support bracket assembly for rear engine mounting(under gearbox)”. It is
comprised of screws and washers securing the support bracket to body,
retainer, coil spring, and “pin assembly, securing retainer to gearbox and
locating support bracket” The illustration does not show the washer or
cotter pin, but does show the hole through the lower end of the pin. My
guess is that along with the engine stablizer this secures the vertical
alignment of
the engine/trans unit and prevents upward movement as would occur under
bumpy road conditions.

Anyone have an update on this topic? I’m dealing with exactly the
same issue, and wondering if there should be a washer secured with
a cotter pin through the hole in the Pin Assembly. I agree that
Plate 1 of the Spare Parts Catalogue does not show or list the
existence of such washer and cotter pin, but it seems that the
Centre Bush (C.12265) could easily be lost without them. I also
wonder if there is a functionality to such washer and cotter pin,
if indeed they’re needed.–

Hi Charlie,
The consensus in the past has been that the cotter pin/washer
was an assembly item removed after assembly. It will work
fine without it as main has for years.
Cheers,

Charlie,

I have done this and it’s a big mistake! The movement of the
transmission immediately bends the cotter pin and it’s hell to get
out after that. It transmits noise into the cockpit.

Forget about it! No possible chance to lose the center bush, as
the hole in the mount is too small.

In reply to a message from CGivans sent Fri 13 May 2011:

the use of a cotter pin and washer is strictly for assy and must be
removed once installed.
The engine stabiliser on the firewall should be correctly adjusted
to minimise any trans movement. Make sure that no load is carried
by the stabiliser or it will tear off the firewall.–

Thanks guys! Always a wealth of information on this forum. Got
all my answers, plus some - and now know when to use that cotter
pin and washer (and more importantly when not to, which is all the
time!)!–

Just a follow up. The original Center Bush and two (I have a 2+2)
Spring Seats in my transmission mount assembly had long since
deteriorated and evaporated from existence (or just lost during a
previous mechanical excursion), causing the engine to sit on and
bounce against the Reaction Plate (C.19179). So in doing the
replace of these rubber items I only had to undo the 5 bolts
holding on the Support Bracket Assembly, put in the new rubber
(poly, actually), and reattach (using a floor jack to push up the
bracket). And to keep the bush in place during this process, I put
a short nail through the hole in the Pin Assembly (could have used
an unbent cotter pin, but no need). Pulled out nail after all
done. Worked like a charm! Only problem I had at all was when
unscrewing the last bolt while removing the Support Bracket
Assembly the spring propelled it into my finger - ouch! Nasty cut.–

Charlie,

Now that’s a good use of that hole!

Hope you noticed that IIRC your car needs two rubber spring
perches – top and bottom of the spring?
