Eric: Are these what used to be referred to in Navy speak as FG 58 (flight
goggle, type 58, although they were not really goggles, in the traditional
sense)? These were American Optical made sunglasses that the Navy used to
issue to Pilots, RIOs, BNs and flight crews in the 70s? I understand AO
stopped producing them in the 80s. If the ones you are referring to are the
modern replacement, I would certainly be interested as I am down to my last
pair of the originals.
Well, as an old aviator myself, I should get in my tuppence.
If you go to an aircraft supply shop where they sell charts, etc., they
usuallly have avaition glasses there too. I buy the ones that change color as
the light conditions change, AND>>>they are only around $20-25. It seem all too
often I land at sunset and go from bright sun to dark just about he time I’m on
Short Final.
I’ve had two pair in the past twenty years, still wear one of them; so they
are sturdy enough to last. I would still have the other pair if I had not bent
over and dropped them down the toilet of a 747 I was taking cross country one
time.
Ahhh, but that’s another story…

I don’t mean to make threats here, but if you guys are going to discuss
aviator glasses on this site,I am going to have to start discussing my
favourite restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula (at this point I have
no fear because I am sure that my buddy Randall will have my back on
this one). Just kidding,I have created enough tension elsewhere.

I am staying out of this one, Ray. Admittedly, I joined the list to learn more
about how to keep my kitty purring contentedly. As a list novice, I was a little
irritated by “No Jag Content” messages. But no longer. My life has been enriched
by exchanges relating to aviation glasses, restaurants, boats, and picking up
young women. With my new-found sophistication I have learned to use emoticons to
show when I am kidding.

It is just possible that more individuals on the list are shopping for good
driving glasses than are contemplating a night on the town in Monterey

I heard a rumor through my Koss 4A headphones that Clint Eastwood walked into the
Hog’s Breath Inn, squinting behind his Bausch and Lomb aviators, and closed the
place down.
