Log to the website of The WorldWatch Institute, NRDC, or even our
VERY own GAO to see we DON’T pay the true cost of nearly ANYTHING!
Yes, it is subsidized…a subsidy is any external cost associated
with the production of a given service or good, not necessarily
reflected in its selling price…those troops in Gulf War I? Free?
They went there for continued access to oil, by and large.
Environmental degradation? Is that encapsulated in the $1.50 you
pay for your gallon of fuel? Nope. Our taxes are used to clean up
messes left by corporations who made their money, then cut and run
(can YOU say Enron?). We don’t EVEN approach the true cost of a
gallon of gas at 5 dollars per gallon. There are MANY resources on
the web and in peer-reviewed scientific journals that will bear
this opinion out. And as for the gallon I used in Tweety the other
day (mandatory Jag content)? Yep…I used it with pride in seeing
it run, but it NEVER left or leaves my mind where that oil came
from, what the burning of it does to the environment, nor does it
dim the fact that in America, with around 25% of the world’s
population, we use around 70% of its natural resources. We are, as
a people, your truly included, pigs. And the day of reckoning is
going to come, no matter what we drive. Malthus was an optimist!
and HE’D not drive an SUV!
He, who does his tiny part, driving a Metro, in FRONT of SUVs…
Also, concerning the 70% tax? Seems that isn’t the case as far as I
can source…average fuel taxes in these 50 states is 42%.–

And our gas cost is comprised of 30% commodity and 70% tax.
Don’t understand this point at all. Petrol in the UK cost a fortune simply
because the goverment taxes the dickens out of it. Nothing to do with the
cost of the stuff. Are you inferring that the US government subsidizes our
gas??? We do pay the TRUE cost/price. It’s determined by an open market
based upon what Joe public will pay for the product. Just like everything
else we buy.

Paul,
America, 25% of the worlds population??? Did you forget to
include China & India? Dont get feeling too important, the rest of
the world can still out-vote you----Back to Jag content, I enjoy
driving my Jag,MGB,Corvette,Minivan and company Truck all in
different ways.
They all have their uses, and if I could afford it, and because we
live in a free Country I would buy every other usefull, usless,
beautiful and ugly vehicle available. Vehicles are produced to
satisfy a varied market and various tastes. Agreed, the way they are
driven may not be to our liking but you cannot condem a product
because some of the users are inept in its opperation. We have all
had experiances with less than ‘polite’ drivers but of course none
of us have ever been offenders, have we?? As long as manufacturers
are leagaly able to market their products & can make a profit doing
so, and we live in a free economy-Power to them!
Now I’m going to get off MY soapbox, do the American thing, and
drool over adverts of other vehicls I cannot afford.–

Paul,
Time for new batteries in your calculator. Last I knew, there
were roughly 6.3 billion of us on the planet, and about 290 million
in the US, which makes us about 4.6% of the population. :-)–

I stand corrected! I got the number bass-ackewards! We do indeed
have about 5% of the world’s population, yet use 26% of its
resources…see why I’m a geologist?
Thanks for the corrections!–

This is a silly arguement…using the attached logic suggests that the
cost of your house should include the cost of the bulldozer that will one
day knock it down, and also the cost of the dumptrucks taking the wreakage
to the dump site, and also the cost of cleaning up any toxic crap you might
have left in your garage etc etc etc…world don’t work
that way, thank goodness.

Hope the UK government doesn’t take the attached view, if they did, everyone
will end up on bicycles because the petrol will cost about $20.00 a gallon
instead of the measly $5.00 right now. Of course, that will never happen
because using some rare sanity, the government will realize that one of it’s
prime revenue streams will be lost…thank goodness for the market
driven economy.
