Last week, several listers were interested in how I has able to use larger
speakers in the existing 4 inch cutouts. Here is what I did along with a
photo:
Bear in mind the biggest problem is the limited depth, not width. After
looking at ‘special’ (read expensive) limited depth speakers, I chose a set of
5.25 inch 2 way Pioneers. They were all of 55 bucks for the pair. For the
depth problem, I went to a plumbing supply store and bought 1 foot of 6 inch
diameter PVC pipe. I measured the distance required to clear the Tranny
tunnel and cut 2 pieces of the PVC to use as “spacers” between the console and
the speaker mounts. This was about one inch. I cut 2 pieces from the PVC,
sanded the flats, roughed the ‘slick’ off the pipe, and painted the new
spacers (rings) with Krinkle Paint. A quick installation of the speakers
using the new spacers and PERFECT !! The Pioneers easily handle a decent
volume with good bass and treble PLUS the speakers (to all but purest eye)
look perfectly stock! Of course…it doesn’t match the new iron today, but as
much as I like Music, I also like the effect of period listening.
