Angus, you’ve touched on a point of great personal interest to me. I
recently sold on a rough 64 coupe that was fitted with a wooden center dash
panel. I swear it is original and correct but no reference will support it.
Can anyone expound on this? I’ve a recollection of reading somewhere that
some were fitted but that’s all. What do the listers think??

I have never seen any literature whatsoever that suggests that wooden centre
panels were correct for E-Types. I wonder whether an errant Mk. II or 340
part made it into the e-type as the result of an owner’s “improvements” or
from a swap meet or junk yard…as I recall, some of these centre panels
were veneered, and some were direct swap replacements for the one in the
E-Type.

A friend has a 340, I can check it out and see. But I seriously doubt any
made it into any production E-Types…they would look out of place, to say
the least.

Steve, Roger, When I purchased my 70 OTS in 1992 from it’s original owner it
had what appeared to be after-market wood trimmed window winders and a wood
veneer (glued on) fascia over the center dash. While the window winders did
not appeal to me I did like the idea of wood in the center dash (but not the
glue-on type).
I quickly learned that the center dash section is essentially wood with a
vinyl covering. In my ongoing restoration efforts I decided to have the
center dash professionally veneered with burlwood. With the instruments
installed it looks quite striking. It also fits within my general rule of
making no modifications to the car that cannot be easily reversed to
original.

I had several friends that had e-types back in the late '60’s when I had
my first OTS.

One of them had a '63 FHC with the aluminum covered dash. He saw a MK 2
or something similar with the wood on the dash and bought all the pieces
that would fit his e-type at the Jaguar dealer.

It looked really nice and I’m suprised that Jaguar didn’t offer it as
original equipment. Of course we didn’t think of them as terribly
collectable then, just as neat sporty cars.

I have never seen reference to a wooden dash nor one fitted. But, it
would be an easy job to do and it would look original. Only if the
light switch was left from the Mk II (it has the additional position
marked ‘S’ (or is it ‘F’) for driving lights would you know for sure.–

My S1 3.8 had a “wooden” center dash when I purchased the car.
It was actually a veneer glued over the orignal dot pattern aluminum.
I believe these kits were available from JC Whitney.

We have used them inthe SIII Etype with success for those who like this
treatment… we have also added top wooden sections to the door as onthe MK II
convertible

Never done one in a SI but not too bad looking on the SIII… IMHO…kind

I don’t thinjkthe wood dash was original. I remember it as a popular period
aftermarket item in the AMCO adds in Road & Track.

There were a number of vendors who sold Walnut dash inserts for E-types,
Vilem B. Haan being one.
