[E-Type] Rear side marker lamps

Are the rear side marker lamps on my 69 OTS supposed to light up,
or are they just reflectors? I took off the lenses and there is no
wiring present. The gaskets don’t have openings for wiring to pass
through either. Is this correct, or did a PO ‘‘fix’’ them for me?
The front side markers do light up.

thanks

Dave,
This is one of those things that changed at some point during production
between '69 and '70. My early '69 (1R8124) front and rear side markers are
reflectors. My old '70 (P1R11687) was wired. I ran into a fellow a few
years ago at a JAGM concours who had wired 1R8121 to work like a late '69 or
early '70. Someone may have the factory notes citing when this occurred in
production.
Personally, I favor the lit option.

Dave,

One way you can check this is to look at the harnesses feeding the
rear side markers. On the passenger side you can remove the spare
tire and see the harness as well as the mounting point for the side
marker. The harness ends there in several connections. One of the
connections is the tail/side light wire. It should have a 4-way
connector on it. One point on this 4-way goes to the tail lamp and
another goes to the side marker. The black wire from the side
marker plugs into a bare metal ground clip attached to a bolt on a
boot seam. If this 4-way is present, your harness is set up for a
side light.

You need to also see if there is a hole in the fender for the
wiring to feed through to the side marker. If the hole exists and
the 4-way is present then either your PO replaced the side markers
with refelctive ones, or the factory continued to use up the
remaining inventory of the refelctiver side markers.

In any case, if the hole exists, it is very easy to add the side
marker. You will need to add a ‘‘pad’’ or special curved gasket under
it that is available from the usuals. They also have the 4-way
connectors and the ground clips.

Dave,

Mine were without lights. When I restored the car I added holes in
the body and side light markers. I bought sockets and harnesses
from Auto Sparks(UK). I wanted the increased safety.

Dave:

Lighting was added to the sidelights in '70. Neither of my '69’s
have them. in '69 DOT required side reflectors only. Jaguar saved
money by buying blank units (which have reflectors built in) and
screwed them to the fenders until DOT required that they be lit. If
you really want to check, unscrew one from the fender and check
behind it. The hole for the wires will not be there on your '69.

There is an excellent S2 Judging Guide posted on the JCNA web site that
lists the vin number when when this change took place.
