Over the years I’ve collected 4.2 alternators & am trying to make a
good one out of bits of others.
The problem I’m having is soldering the stator to the diodes. My
Welder soldering iron doesn’t seem to have the grunt to melt the
old joints.
Is the 45/55 solder they call for something special?Do I need that
old copper-headed poker of a thing we had in highschool 100 years
ago?What about propane?
Next is changing the slip ring.Got the tiny phillips head screws
out but I can’t figure out how the wiring /solder hooks on.
Anyone out there done this?

Hi Mike, I can’t give you any advice on the specifics of
rebuilding this particular alternator, as I have not done
one. With respect to the soldering job; for occasions when
the electically powered soldering iron has insufficient
umph, I use a small butane torch with a very small flame (
say, less tham 1 cm long ). There are ones on the market
specifically designed for soldering, which you recharge with
lighter fluid. Hope this helps–

Mike,
To properly solder the diodes, you need a small torch, and some
higher-temp solder, like silver solder. Be very sure to heat-sink
the diode lead, or you’ll ‘‘cook’’ it in the soldering process.–
