[E-Type] recommendations for wire wheel cleaner

I recently purchased a spray bottle of wheel cleaner, but am
reluctant to use it as the directions say rinse off in 30 seconds.I
am afraid it might contain acid or something that would harm my new
Daytons. Anyone out there have a favorite that workks really well.
Thanks

British Wire Wheel sells a wheel cleaner that I like. Spray
on, agitate and rinse off. Pretty simple.

I use Meguiars Hot Rims cleaner and have been
satisfied with it. It was recommended by someone
on this list. It says to remove in 15 seconds, so I
can only get about half a wheel done at a time.

All the chrome wire wheel cleaners that really do the job on wire
wheels contain acid, some with hydrofluoric acid, whic is said to
be very bad.

I have used several, and have even let some sit too long, which
resulted in splotches on the wheels – but the next cleaning the
splotches went away and the wheels still look like new (these are
the 1964 original factory wheels).

If you follow the instructions you will have great wheels without
the hard work. Don’t breathe the spray vapors!

I have used these to good effect.

British Wire Wheel’s cleaner
Eagle One chrome wire wheel cleaner
Meguiars Hot Rims all wheel cleaner (Ray Livingston put me onto
this one)

Best to use something you can get at the neighborhood auto parts
shop.

Be sure to dry the wheels to keep water spots off if your water is
hard.

British Wire Wheel also sells a wheel preserver that you spray on
after washing to keep them nice longer. Works OK, though I have
not used it much.

I’ve used Westley’s Wire Wheel cleaner and Westley’s Bleche Wite wheel
cleaner for years with no problems. I contains an acid. For grins, and
beacuse I was curious, I left a puddle of the wire wheel cleaner on a spare
wire wheel overnight and rinsed it off the next day. It didn’t appear to
damage the chrome at all.

I find a 50/50 mix of Simple Green and water, a brush and a garden
hose works fine if the wheels are real dirty. For a quick cleaning
a 20/80 mix works fine. I find I can let them air dry in the shade
and if there are spots (which only occur at the bottom lip of the
rim) they wipe off easily with MeGuires Quick Detail.

I have used regular chrome cleaner with a tooth brush every
so often to keep the chrome clean, and also use the car wash
once in a while. This keeps the wheels looking like new.
As long as the dirt has no chance of staying on long.

Quent,
Mequiar’s Hot Rims is great. Eagle One Chrome wheel cleaner is
also good, as is the British Wire Wheel stuff. All of them
contain phosphoric acid, and other things. As Jerry pointed out,
some contain hydroflouric acid, which is especially nasty stuff,
but it’s in very low concentration. You really can’t get chrome
wheels clean without phosphoric acid, unless you enjoy spending
hours and hours with little bitty rags and metal polish, doing
manual labor. Besides, the acid doesn’t do any harm at all as long
as you follow the directions. I’ve used the stuff for years, and
my wheels look good as new. For drying without water spots, use an
electric leaf blower (works great on the whole car, and beats the
poop outta shammies and rags).–

S-100 wheel cleaner from your local motorcycle retailer (Harley
Dealer, etc.), therefore, readily available. Finger pump-on (non-
areosol). The dirtier your wheel, the longer you leave it on. Non
corrosive. Consistancy of dinosaur spit (does’t run off when
sprayed on). Spray off with high pressure water (full blast garden
hose works fine). About $7-9 for a bottle that will do all 4 wheels
at least one-time. A fellow e-type owner/motorcyclist (Triumph, of
course!) pointed me in this direction a couple of years ago.
Haven’t used anything since. Have had no need to brush, or hand
wipe wheel/spokes since. There are other S-100 products available
for other motorcycle detailing jobs, but the wheel cleaner is all
that I have used. To the best of my knowledge, S-100 products are
imported from Germany, and are synthetic, detergent-based cleaners
and not solvent, acidic, or lye based.

Not an endorsement, just a satisfied customer.–
