I learned a little as to how they identify imperfections and micro-dings
and such. They have two long fluorescent lights that they move along
the body of the car, and by looking at the reflection on the car itself
they can see the problems in bendings or distortions of the light
lines.
Ahhh yes. I believe these lights come in different sizes-nine inches longer
for 2+2’s. They are known in the trade as spam lights.
When I first took my red E into the Tech. School for paint matching in
1981, the instructor stood it on a platform under a set of special
fluoros, walked around it, and then politely asked “which of the eight
different shades of red on the car body would I like them to match the
paint to?” (it had been in a few prangs).
Looked OK in ordinary incandescant light and daylight…but under these
showed up every spot repair and panel defect you could imagine.
Beauty is only nine inches deep?

Well…now that you mention it…when we mixed up the new batch of
paint for the hood…that would have made nine… ;o)
