[E-Type] replacement dash top recommendation

1969 4.2 2+2. I want to replace the dash top in my
E. Any recommendations for a source would help me.
Thanks in advance. Bob–

Funny you mention this: Tony Lee at SNG, this very day, quoted me
about ~$100 for the dash top cover, which has to installed by
someone who KNOWS WTF he’s doing. I attempted it on mine (with a
crappy aftermarket dash top repop) and it came out…horrible.

I got mine from SNG as well. Wiggy, I felt the same way about
mine till I looked at the one on my 73 (original) and it
looked just as bad! They aren’t a Ferrari dash
Cheers,

I’ve done several dash tops, with somewhat mixed but satisfactory results. Dash
tops aren’t as easy to replace as it would appear they should be. But, what ever
is? It’s extremely important that the dash top aligns properly with the
underlying metal panel. It’s helps to leave the new dash top out in the sun on a
warm/hot day and be prepared with a heat gun as you start gluing the edges down.
Be careful with the heat gun not to overheat the vinyl. After you’ve re-covered
one 3 or 4 times in rapid succession, you will get better at it:-). I would go
to a local auto upholstery shop and see if they will pour off some of their
‘good’ contact cement. You might want to bring along the new dash top and panel
and see what he will charge you. It’s really not all that difficult.
Good Luck and be patient.

I bought a dash cover from one of the usual suppliers and after I
had a look at it; returned it. They were great about returning the
product.
I ended up buying some vinyl from a local upolstery shop and with a
little contact cement, recovered my dash. I am very pleased with
the result even though it is not perfect. Next time I do this. . .
it will be perfect. The trick is to take your time and use a heat
gun (very carefully).–

Hi Guys…I did mine with some nice black leather I got on
ebay. the vendor told me how to treat it so it would last in
the sun (shoe polish) I did both pieces…(2+2 dash tops
are in two pieces with a bead between the two) worked fine
for me the dash to isn’t installed yet, but looks ok in place.

I had never done any upholstery work in my life until I
started restoring my 64 E. I got a new dashtop from SNG and
was very pleased. I actually didn’t have much trouble at
all. Using a good quality upholstery glue is definitely
important. Cutting the slits in it for the vents was
probably the most tedious part. I showed it in my blog at
From the Lift: Details, Details. I also have a number of pictures
that I posted if it would help you. There are tons of my
pics here at these 2 addresses. You can search through them
and find a number of the ones I took while doing the dash.

Good luck, just take it slow and be very deliberate.–

I bought the replacement top from one of the usuals and installed
it myself and it came out great. Took an afternoon. Do it on a
warm day and use a heat gun on the corners and sharp bends and it
will come out just fine. I think the key is don’t rush and be
careful not to overheat the vinyl when using the heat gun. It goes
without saying that a good adhesive is a must.

And I’m far from an expert on this, but if I can do a decent job of
it you can as well.–

Like replacing the seat covers, it is not difficult at all, it is time consuming. But, hay, I got more time than money.

Richard,

Nice restoration and great photos. A ‘few’ of them seem to be missing
captions, though.
