[E-Type] Replacing hand brake pads

I have searched the forum and really didn’t find the
information I need so hopefully someone here can help. I
need to replace the hand brake pads and would prefer to do
it without removing the IRS. I’m told it can be done with
considerable difficulty. The question is , approximately
how long should it take an experienced mechanic to replace
the pads in situ versus dropping the IRS and then
replacing them…or would the time factor be relatively
the same regardless of what method was used.Assuming
things go well,would it take 4 hrs,6hrs…more?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

If I was going to do the job on my car, I can drop the IRS
and do it in less time by dropping the IRS than by laying
under the car for a couple days. Your time may vary
considerably if your IRS has never been down, or if you
neglected to use any anti-seize on the bolts and radius arm
cups the last time it was taken down.–

Thanks Tom. It’s quite possible the IRS was dropped by the
second owner since the rear discs and pads were replaced
so it may not be too difficult …how long would that
take? What’s the most difficult part…getting the radius
arms off?

You have to have some luck with the radius arms. That said,
the most tricky bit is preventing the IRS from toppling
forward. Have helpers ready, and warn them for this.–

To reiterate and rephrase Don’s question…

  1. Assuming the radius arms are completely free, unseized, but not
unbolted yet, brakes are still connected, and the availability of a
couple of people to help, what is the typical time a typical home
mechanic will take to remove their 1st IRS?

  2. Once they’ve done it a few times, learned a bit, what would be
    typical time?

  3. Apart from in the pits, what’s the fastest anyone’s ever dropped
    the IRS?

  4. Is the replacement about the same amount of time, (plus brake
    bleed time), or quite different.

Thanks

I think you can get the IRS out in an 1.0 - 1.5 hours, assuming you
have a lift. I did mine on my own (on a lift), moving carefully and I
don’t think it took me a whole lot longer than that. Allow extra
time for a jammed/stuck or otherwise troublesome exhaust system.

To get it back in…not done it yet but just to get the main unit
in there and hanging…I would guess and hour or so.

Time to bleed brakes…no idea. Should be easy and normally I
would allow about 1.5hrs to do that but people seem to have a LOT of
trouble bleeding the rear brakes…On Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 12:08 PM, ozusa liam.j.orourke@gmail.com wrote:

As has been said, if the radius arms come off easily removing
the rest of the IRS is a snack; 15 minute job with a couple of
helpers to steady the unit. If they’re stuck then so are
you…so try to get them off first.

Replacing it, with helpers is pretty easy; half an hour max.
It was a job that I avoided at first because it seemed
daunting, but once you’ve done it once you’ll be fine.–

Don!
On my 69E I had small covers from the trunk area to get
to the hand brakes.

The hand brake pads are easy to replace, you just have
to raise the car up.

The exhausts are the biggest hassle.

The radius arms can be left in place but unbolted at the
small end?

I made a special tool to remove my radius bushes
non-destructively, they were extremely tight!

Are you CERTAIN the handbrake calipers cannot be unbolted,
slid round the back of the disc and manipulated out, with
the tie-plate removed?

Most of the Saloons allow this, although its very tricky,
especially on one side, still much quicker than drop irs.

I have also personally witnessed an experienced Jag mechanic
change handbrake pads on a S2 XJ, without removing
anything!..took him less than 1hr–
