[E-Type] Repo Lucas battery and hold down kit question: 63 xke

Hey Guys,

I just received a repo Lucas battery from Antique Battery
Company and it measures 9 x 6 3/4. The new battery hold
down kit I bought from SNG Barratt fits a battery 10 x 6
3/4. 1 inch too wide. Is the hold down wrong? is the
battery wrong ? or are they both correct for my 63 XKE ?

The kit came with rubbers that fit around the inside of the
hold down. Here’s the kit I bought:

It looks like the full kit. As I have ordered from both
before with no issues not sure what to tell you. Something
is wrong. Are you sure you asked for the correct battery?
Thay make a few sizes.–

I did the exact same cut-and-shut to fit the hold-down kit
to an Interstate MT-25 battery (9’’ long). The side rubber
pretty well hides the cut-line. That was long ago enough
(I’m on my second MT-25) that I’m not sure if the hold-down
kit was supplied by SNG. Clearly, the Interstate is not
‘‘original’’, but they do seem to last a decade or so.–

Well my battery measures pretty close to group 35. So this
makes me question the repo hold down. Can somebody do me a
favor and measure the outer dimensions of their battery
hold down? thanks Chris–

6 7/8 by 10 inches. The 6 7/8’’ might turn out to be 7’',
it’s not square vertically. It was bought from XKs or
BAUSA (now SNG) back in 2000.

Thanks Jerry for taking the measurements. They are
identical to my new hold down kit. It’s funny that I have
the same battery as shown at this web site here:

but his hold down fits snug around the battery. I’ll try to
send him an email and see if his is original or a modified
repo.

thanks again

Chris,

My new Group 35 is indeed just over 9’’ long; however the
hold-down with rubber pads fits so that there is no open
space showing around the inside, though it is about 1/2’’
short of touching the hold-down on the inside.

Just found paperwork for my Optima Red Top battery purchased
in 2003, still going strong.
battery is exact fit for original frame on my 70 E.
Battery is group 34/ 10x6 3/4’'.
When purchased I took frame to shop and got biggest battery
that would fit. Optima did not have a listing for E Type.

In reply to a message from manyc sent Sun 15 Jun 2014:

chris,
I found the same issue that you are having with my hold down kit
form SNGB. I called them and sent photos to illustrate the issue I
was having that shows it too long to fit into the space available
without fouling on the front sill clsing panel and the VR bracket.
While they were willing to admit it appears as though my battery
hold down was too long to fit well and too wide to grab the battery
on the sides, they only offered to return it. No comment on the
issue of it’s incorrect dimensions (if indeed this is the case). I
am encouraged to learn I am not the only one with this concern
about thhe dimensions of the hold down, but in the end, I found the
sill closing panel was bent inward a bit by the body shop, so I
move it and that helped enough to allow the clamps to fit, and I
was able to center the clamping top ring using the rubbers on each
end to catch the edges of the battery. It is snug, but is not as
solid as the original would be in my mind. If I get anxious about
it I will cut and weld it to a better fot for me like a few others
have done.–

Well, it looks like I got the answer I was suspecting. The hold-
