[E-Type] Rubber seal for Hinge Pillar, need help

I have a 70 2+2 and I am nearing installation of the rear
quarter windows. BD 17071/2 is a rubber seal for
the ‘Quarter light hinge pillars’ for both the FHC and 2+2.
The 2+2 also uses an additional one on the ‘Window frame
standing pillars’. The FHC requires 2 and the 2+2 requires
4.
I don’t remember removing anything like these and I can’t
figure out how they go on or where they go. The quarter
light hinge pillar does have a groove that might be used to
put the rubber seal in but groove slot is only about 1/2
wide enough and the groove is on the front side of the
hinge pillar.
I don’t have a guess about the use of the second one per
side.
Since there are several J-L posters that have 2+2’s I am
sure some one has the answer.
Thanks in advance, Joel.–

Joel,
Nice work on your restoration and pictorial. My old W Jag
catalog does not give BD 17071/2 numbers. I don’t find a
diagram for placing anything around the 1/4 window other
than the soft window surround and the door shut face. I know
we have to seal up the 5 screw hinge plate fixture (factory
did on my 72 with hand applied goop) where it is bolted
back-to-face to the B pillar and leaves a 1/8’’ gap for the
entire 12’’ length. The factory also applied trim vinyl on
the B pillar for finishing/hiding what the chrome and door
post cover doesn’t cover. I wonder if your seals are meant
to be placed in that vicinity as a water seal.
I visit Omaha/Offutt often; would like to see your beautiful
car.

Phil; Thanks for your effort, it supports the theory that
something is needed but what is supplied may not work or
other efforts are just as good.
I have put the vinyl on the exposed areas as before tear
down. I just don’t remember the BD17071/2 seal being any
where. SNG lists it for FHC and 2+2, XK’s lists it for the
FHC but not for the 2+2 and what I use the most, the Series
II book from XKE Books lists it for both FHC and 2+2 also.
The seal kit I have I bought from ‘Special Interest Car
Parts’ years ago (at least 92) when I first got the car and
most have been in storage till now. The seals are soft and
that which I have I plan on using.
I am planning on using 3M weather strip caulk to seal the
back of the chrome hinge pillar strip. I have used it to
seal all of the seal retainers.
If I remember to take some pictures I will post them as
they may be helpful to others.
Regards, Joel.–

Hi,
On my S1 2+2 there is a seal on the forward edge of the
quaterlight hinge pillar, which I guess fills the space
between the B post seal and the door edge seal to reduce
wind noise.

The Vynil trimmed aluminium plate on the upper B Post is
tucked behind the U shaped seal on the edge of the door
aperture on its front edge, so on my car I used a 12 inch
length of the same B post material to clip the rear edge
and it looks appropriate. I hope this helps and will try and
post a picture in the E Type Photo Album.

Art; Thanks for your reply and the pictures. Your pictures
show the strip, BD 17071/2 inserted into the chrome hinge
pillar and the ‘flap’ is next to the ‘B’ post seal, just
the opposite as to what I thought. Now I just have to
figure out how to get that rubber strip into the narrow 12’’
slot. Did you insert the rubber seal into the strip and if
you did how did you do it?
If you have a picture of the back side of the post that
would be great.
Regards, Joel.–

Joel,
I just installed these seals on Bettie. They are shaped
with a little rubber ‘‘foot’’ which is pressed into the ‘‘C’’
channel that is on the front of the chromed hinge pillar.
I set the front (exterior facing) lip into the ‘‘C’’ channel
pushing it into the channel as far as I could, then using a
flat blade screwdriver I pressed the other side of the
rubber foot into the channel. It is hard and slow work, but
with patience you’ll get it.–

Hi Joel,
Just as John said, slot one side of the seal in first and then
ease the other side in with blunt screwdriver so as not to
cratch the chrome.
Good luck!
