Mike. Not ever done the procedure but the Torsion Bar Tensioning Rack (TBTR)
purpose is to unload/load tension of the the Torsion Bars (TB) when Removing
and Replacing/Reinstalling (R&R) them. Once installed properly, the TBTR has
no purpose for adjusting ride height/clearance. I did not mention that in
addition to the TBTR, there is also a ‘Setting Gauge’ used-again, it is flat
steel as discussed in my previous msg except that the C to C hole
dimension(for the S-III) is 19.25" and fits to the upper and lower shock
absorber mounting bolts.
The TBTR is two arms that fit to the rear of the TB’s aft of their mounting
brackets. The two arms are connected by threaded rods with a (3-4"?) barrel
nut in the center which, when turned, causes a twisting action on the TB’s.
With the ‘Setting Gauges’ installed, turning one way facilitates loosening the
rear brackets for TB removal. Turning the other way preloads the TB’s in
order to reattach the brackets. I do not believe that the Torsion Bar
Tensioning Rack is a REQUIRED tooI for this operation-just easier/quicker with
it. If you want the whole procedure I will provide it by separate email-unless
there are others that would like to see it via “e-type”. I do not know why
the TBTR’s use started when it did with no attendant part number changes.
The start numbers for the 1973 MY LHD OTS chassis is 1S73856, engine is
7S8179.
What is your E-Type’s manufacture date, chassis, engine and gearbox numbers?
