[E-Type] S1 Radio Console Restoration

I am looking for some assistance on the restoration of my S1
4.2 radio console. My research so far has indicated:

  1. Radio console has a front trim panel (blue vinyl rather
than leather?) held on by four spring washers.

  2. Ashtray casing is riveted to console.

  3. Speakers attach from the inside and in turn hold in the
    silver grills.

  4. Outside left and right sides are covered with black
textured vinyl trim pieces (possibly fiber board backed?).

  5. Radio (Radiomobile in my case) is held in place by the
large brass nuts on the spindles.

Can anyone confirm the above is correct?

Things I am not sure of:

  1. Two chrome bolt hold the console top to the main dash. In
my car there seems to be two angle plates with welded nuts
for this job. They do not look original - what should they
    look like?

  2. The parts catalog shows two chromed knurled nuts on the
lower console sides. Mine were missing/never fitted and I
cannot see what they attach to or what they are for. Any
    ideas/pictures?

  3. Are the black side trims glued to the console?

  4. Parts manual describes 8 domed nuts to attach speakers.
    Where/why/how?

Any help, photos, directions or experiences would be
gratefully received.

Regards

Thanks Christoph - I am getting there. I saw your pictures
during my research. So:

  1. Are the side panels glued on?
  2. Someone has hacked off the rear radio supports on mine,
but not a problem. I can get by.
  3. What are the chrome the nuts attached to?

Thanks - and any more thoughts?

Regards

David,

My '64 FHC has the same console (changed over in late '63)

  1. front trim panel, right, but mine was covered in leather from
the factory. I don’t know, they may have changed to vinyl at some
point, but at 889791 it was leather.

  2. Not sure there, I can check in a few weeks. I replaced the
ashtray and I don’t recall using rivets, but…?

  3. Correct

  4. Correct, vinyl is heat treated and molded into shape.

  5. Yes, but there are also on mine two internal braces that screw
to the rear sides of the radio. No holes for that on my radio, so
I rigged a support from them.

Second part:

  1. Those sound just as original. Not ‘‘angle iron’’, though but
    angled iron nonetheless.

  2. They just hold the bottom rear edges of the side panels to the
bodywork. There are two welded-in angles woth studs that go into
the holes in the bottom side panels, and those knurled chrome nuts
    screw on.

  3. Yes, glued to the radio console

  4. There are 4 inward-facing studs on each side panel. The grilles
then speakers slide onto those studs, and the dome nuts screw them
into place. I would expect dome nuts are long gone, mine were not
originally held in by dome nuts and the original speakers were
still fitted. Mine was a Motorola AM radio, so probably dealer-
    installed.

Thanks guys - pictures are worth a thousand words! I now
have all the information I need to proceed.

I have just ordered one of these to see if it will fit in a
Jaguar.

All the right looks but with iPod connection, AM/FM and 100
watts. I will report back when it is fitted together with
the ‘hidden’ antenna from the same place.–

Dang! That radio looks just about right. Me, I’m buying one right
now (or real soon now). It seems to have everything I might need…

What’s that black panel top center where a cassette might go? They
say no cassette.

  1. Ashtray casing is riveted to console.

My ashtray is attached with 4 small screws and not with pop rivets.
You can see the screws in one of the pictures.

Everything fitted and works fine. No pictures of the console
inside the car yet as it is being re-trimmed but I will
upload some pictures later today.

In reply to a message from Heuer sent Sat 12 Jan 2008:

I have uploaded a few pictures to show what the installation
looks like off the car. Interior including radio console is
now being worked on by Suffolk & Turley so I will post a
completed installation photo when it returns.

The radio is a modern digital AM/FM one that has been
manufactured to look vintage. I bought it via eBay from
Woody’s Custom Shop
http://stores.ebay.com/Woodys-Custom-Shop (listed as Vintage
Look Porsche 356 Radio - $169) but it is part of the range
produced by these guys: http://www.casmfg.com/radios.htm.
The shafts can be adjusted for width and length. Fittings
from original radios (knobs, facias etc) are a direct fit.

I bought a u/s Radiomobile 1070 off eBay for $10 and made
use of the fascia, trim and knobs. Power output is
60w/channel and there are four channels. Digital display is
behind the analogue dial decal. Switchgear is electronic
push/twist. Although not strictly necessary I also bought
the bespoke iPod interface/charger from Woody’s ($35) - the
iPod is fitted inside the ashtray.

As my car has no external antenna and not wanting to drill
the body I also bought the powered electronic ‘hidden’
antenna ($35) which is placed on the rear OTS parcel shelf -
experimentation required to find best reception! Speakers
are Sakura XS65 100w which fit the radio console without
modification.

I can recommend Woody’s Custom Shop as they are used to
dealing with classic cars and were very helpful in answering
my questions. All in all a good way forward rather than
using modern gear or the very expensive vintage radio
‘upgrades’. Oh and it sounds good!

Gee, David that looks like a super product! The Radiomobile
hardware is just right. A true vintage look. I’ll definitely give
it a thought if my setup goes bad.

Very nice setup David, I would like to do the same but:
I have S1.5 without any radio. Do you think that it will
work with s2 radio console ? I searched Radiomobile 1070 on
e-bay. nothing close in US. Do you have suggestion for facia
(bezel) trim and knobs ? I searched internet for Sakura
XS65, noting came out??? Any other speaker suggestions?–

In reply to a message from tufan sent Mon 14 Jan 2008:

The radio will fit any radio console including the S2. It
comes with knobs (as seen in the photos) but no fascia
although they can supply a generic black one to get you
started. As I had an old Radiomobile to hand I experimented
with it and found the fascia and knobs will fit. One of the
knobs needs a little persuasion or filing at the stem for a
comfortable fit. I actually prefer the Woody’s supplied knobs.

The Radiomobile I used looks exactly like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Radiomobile-Classic-Push-Button-Car-Radio_W0QQitemZ120209937994QQihZ002QQcategoryZ9903QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

There may be other models that will work. All you will need
is the oblong chrome fascia trim, the knobs, the two brass
nuts/chrome washers on the stems and the two square black
rexine panels around the knobs.

The speakers were in the car when I bought it and like you I
have been unable to find a supplier. They were installed in
1999 by a car audio fitter. Sakura do make a range of car
related items. Suggest you take your console to a car
entertainment shop and explain what you want. I am sure they
will be able to provide you with something that will fit.

Let me know if you need more information or photos.
